Perfume Announce Indefinite Hiatus After 25 Years Together

Japanese electro-pop legends Perfume have officially announced that they’ll be putting the group into what they poetically call a “cold sleep” by the end of 2025.

The news dropped on their official fan club site on 21 September, marking exactly 20 years since their major-label debut and capping off an anniversary year filled with concerts, exhibitions, and album releases.

Perfume – consisting of A-chan, Kashiyuka and Nocchi – made it clear this isn’t a farewell.

Instead, the trio described the decision as a positive milestone, a way of freezing this shining chapter of their story while preparing to evolve into a “new Perfume” in the future.

They stressed that the break isn’t born out of negativity, but a chance to recharge, refocus, and grow individually before stepping back onto the stage together.

The hiatus announcement comes right after one of the busiest years of their career.

In 2025, Perfume released their two-part album Nebula Romance, hosted a retrospective exhibition tracing their 25-year journey, and pulled off a massive 23-show nationwide tour across 11 cities.

To top it all off, they’re closing this chapter with a long-awaited concert at Tokyo Dome – their first there in five years – with worldwide streaming and cinema screenings to share the experience with fans far and wide.

Why “Cold Sleep”?

Fans will recognise the phrase “cold sleep” from Perfume’s own storytelling.

The concept popped up earlier in their Nebula Romance arena tour, which framed the trio as characters awakening from a futuristic slumber to continue their mission.

By using the same word now, Perfume cleverly turn their hiatus into part of their creative narrative – not an ending, but another chapter.

There’s no set timeline for their return, but the members promised they will be back.

Each of them wants to take this period as a chance to reflect on their own lives, build new experiences, and then reunite stronger than ever.

In their heartfelt message, they thanked fans for standing by them for over two decades, asking for support as they take this much-needed pause before returning as an upgraded “new Perfume.”

And they’re not vanishing overnight – fans still have plenty to look forward to before the curtain comes down on 2025.

Perfume are providing the theme song for NHK’s To Your Eternity Season 3, which airs in October, and the Tokyo Dome shows in late September are already shaping up to be a historic send-off for this era.
