Inferno of Wings: Tencent’s New Fantasy Costume Drama Confirms Dai Luwa & Wang Hongyi as Leads

Tencent has officially locked in its next big fantasy costume drama: Inferno of Wings (燃羽), adapted from Bai Lu Cheng Shuang’s popular novel Magpie Walking On A Branch (鹊踏枝).

The series will kick off filming in November 2025 with Guo Jingming in the director’s chair and Qian Jue handling the screenplay.

Filming location: Hengdian World Studio.

Guo Jingming, best known for the divisive yet box-office-dominating Tiny Times films, is expected to bring his signature glossy visual style and grand emotional flourishes to this ancient fantasy.

Screenwriter Qian Jue, who previously worked on Battle of Reality (BOR), will be adapting the intricate novel for television.

Together, the pair aim to fuse mythological lore with a layered character drama that blends mystery, romance, and high fantasy.

The casting has fans buzzing — Dai Luwa and Wang Hongyi, who previously shared the screen in Lost You Forever (2023), are reuniting.

Many still remember Dai Luwa’s performance as the spirited A Nian, while Wang Hongyi impressed as the steadfast Chi Shui Fenglong.

Netizens even call them “the most grounded duo” from that show, and excitement is high to see how their chemistry translates into this new fantasy world.

In Inferno of Wings, Wang Hongyi takes on the role of Ru Yi, a demon who possesses a human body to escape a heavenly calamity.

His journey is anything but straightforward — not only must he navigate mysteries tied to the body’s original owner, but he also encounters Shen Zhi Yuan (played by Dai Luwa), a love from his past life, reigniting a bond buried for thousands of years.

The 30-episode drama follows Ru Yi as he balances between human and monster, piecing together forgotten secrets while trying to restore his powers.

Themes of sacrifice, love across lifetimes, and the blurred line between duty and desire give the tale its emotional punch.

Beyond the romance, the narrative also dives into classical Chinese mythological motifs.

The concept of demons interfering with celestial order has long roots in literature and folklore, with scholars linking it to ideas of fate, rebellion, and cosmic justice.

With Guo Jingming’s lavish eye for spectacle, Qian Jue’s layered writing, and the proven synergy of Dai Luwa and Wang Hongyi, Inferno of Wings has all the ingredients of a breakout hit in the fantasy historical romance category.

As filming begins in November, all eyes will be on Tencent to see whether this production can soar into the ranks of its most beloved costume dramas.
