Hong Kong’s comedy king Dayo Wong (黃子華) might be a master at keeping audiences guessing on stage, but when it comes to his personal life, he usually likes things low-key.
That’s why the internet went into overdrive this week when a cosy birthday snap hinted at a possible new romance.

The actor, who just marked his 65th birthday, gathered a handful of celebrity pals for an early celebration, with Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) sharing a cheerful group photo on Instagram.

But fans weren’t staring at the cake or décor – they zeroed in on the young woman hugging Dayo Wong from behind, head resting gently on his shoulder.
The relaxed pose looked affectionate enough to fuel whispers that the star had finally gone public with a new relationship.
Dayo Wong’s Straightforward Response
Not one to let speculation snowball, Dayo addressed the chatter directly on Facebook. He clarified that the woman in the photo was not a girlfriend, but his long-time friend Wong Cheng Yan (黃呈欣).
He reminded fans that Wong ChengYan once played his daughter over a decade ago in the stage play The Real Thing (咁愛咁做).

Since then, the two have maintained a warm “father-daughter-like” bond. Dayo explained that hugging had simply become their way of greeting each other – and given they hadn’t seen each other for five years, Wong Cheng Yan’s playful affection at his birthday wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.
“She’s always been a bit mischievous,” he joked.
Many fans appreciated the actor’s openness, saying he didn’t need to explain himself but they were glad he did.
