Mark Chao Leads The Heart Season 2 as Filming Officially Kicks Off

Chinese drama The Heart is officially back in action. Cameras have started rolling in Ningbo for The Heart Season 2, and the hospital corridors of Dongli are ready to welcome back some very familiar faces.

Returning to their white coats are Mark Chao as Dr Xiao Feng, Mao Xiaotong as Dr Xiao Ran, and Jin Shijia as Dr Lin Yi — a trio fans have grown attached to since the first season.

Their reunion promises to carry forward the heartfelt and steady storytelling that made the series a quiet favourite among viewers.

Season 2 jumps forward two years after the events of Season 1.

Xiao Feng, fresh from a stint in rural medical aid, comes back with a promotion — he’s now the Director of Cardiology.

But the title doesn’t come easy: he’s soon caught between his ideals as a doctor and the realities of hospital administration.

Meanwhile, Lin Yi continues to be bold in the operating theatre but is confronted by a looming personal challenge — a family health history that begins to weigh heavily on him.

Xiao Ran, steady as ever, keeps the team together, offering both professional sharpness and emotional support when tensions rise at Dongli Hospital.

This new chapter also brings in fresh characters. Zhang Jianing joins as Ouyang Da, and there’s a special appearance by veteran actress Joan Chen, who steps in as Xiao Ran’s mother.

Viewers are also crossing their fingers for the return of Chen Haoyu as Chen Yue, though her comeback hasn’t yet been confirmed.

While The Heart may not be the buzziest drama out there, it has earned praise for quality production and its grounded portrayal of hospital life.

Instead of over-dramatics, it chooses to tackle themes that mirror real-world medical struggles: resource shortages, patient-doctor trust, and thorny ethical dilemmas.

Season 2 looks set to continue this same balance — humanistic drama wrapped in medical reality. For fans of thoughtful storytelling, the new season could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
