Takahata Mitsuki Joins 5 Centimeters per Second Live-Action

Takahata Mitsuki Cast as Akari in Live-Action 5 Centimeters per Second
5 Centimeters per Second Live-Action Film Reveals Fourth Teaser Visual Featuring Takahata Mitsuki

The much-anticipated live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters per Second has just dropped a major casting reveal — and it’s making waves among anime and film fans alike. Actress Takahata Mitsuki will play the adult version of heroine Akari Shinohara, a role beloved by followers of Makoto Shinkai’s iconic 2007 anime film.

The movie, set to hit Japanese cinemas on 10 October 2025, is helmed by celebrated photographer and filmmaker Yoshiyuki Okuyama, known for his work on striking commercials and music videos. Hokuto Matsumura takes the lead as Takaki Tono, with the story spanning his 18-year journey through life, love, and lingering memories.

Shinkai’s original anime was praised for its raw emotional weight and gentle pacing — no explosive plot twists, no traditional heroes or villains, just a bittersweet portrayal of people drifting through time and relationships. This new live-action version promises to keep that heart intact while adding a fresh human touch.

From ‘Concept’ to ‘Human Being’

New Teaser Visual Shows Takahata Mitsuki as Akari in 5 Centimeters per Second

For Takahata, taking on Akari was both exciting and daunting. She admitted that in the anime, Akari always felt like a “concept of an ideal woman” — someone so graceful that “cherry blossom petals seemed to flutter whenever she moved.” When the role was offered to her, her initial reaction was: “Really? Me?!”

But reading the live-action script changed her perspective. “This Akari isn’t just a concept — she’s a human being,” Takahata said. “In the anime, I realised I’d been seeing Akari through Takaki’s eyes. Here, she feels more real, more grounded.”

She also expressed joy at working with Okuyama — a former classmate she’s known since her early career in photography shoots — especially on what will be his first full-length commercial feature.

A Glimpse of Akari

Alongside the announcement, the fourth teaser visual was unveiled, showing Takahata as Akari sitting on a bus, staring thoughtfully ahead while holding a flyer.

The hazy window light and the caption — “Favourite views, favourite words. Back then, I found them all.” — hint at a story steeped in memory, nostalgia, and quiet longing.

Shinkai’s Honest Reaction: “I Cried”

Makoto Shinkai himself attended a screening of the finished film and confessed to being unexpectedly overwhelmed.

“At first, I felt uneasy — like I’d handed over an incomplete baton to a younger team,” he shared. “But partway through, the film completely pulled me in. I didn’t even know if I was crying because of the original story, Okuyama’s vision, or a longing for the lost 2000s… but I was deeply moved.”

Shinkai praised the team for capturing the same “imperfect seeds” from two decades ago, but allowing them to bloom into something rich and whole in live action. “For almost the first time, I felt truly glad I created 5 Centimeters per Second.”

Unlike typical romance dramas, 5 Centimeters per Second thrives on its stillness — its willingness to linger on fleeting moments, awkward silences, and unspoken words. With Okuyama’s fresh perspective and Takahata’s grounded portrayal of Akari, this adaptation is shaping up to be both a love letter to the original and a reimagining for a new audience.

The countdown to October has officially begun. And if Shinkai’s tearful praise is anything to go by, we might need to bring tissues to the cinema.
