Tokyo witnessed the end of an era on August 14 as Michishige Sayumi, the “never-aging idol” and former Morning Musume member, officially retired from the entertainment industry at 36.

Her farewell concert at Zepp Diver City marked the culmination of a career spanning 8,243 days—including brief hiatuses—since she joined the iconic J-pop group as a 13-year-old sixth-generation member back in 2003.

Initially inexperienced in singing and dancing, Michishige struggled to stand out among her peers. That changed around 2006 when her sharp-tongued yet confident “I’m the cutest” persona began capturing the public’s imagination.

She became a mainstay on variety shows and eventually rose to become Morning Musume’s eighth leader in 2012, guiding the group until her graduation in 2014 with the longest membership record at the time.

After a two-year break, she returned in 2017, focusing on live performances while fully embracing her peak idol image—a philosophy she famously described as, “10s are cute, 20s are super cute, 30s are ultra cute. I don’t age, I peak every day.”

Sayumi Michishige’s decision to retire was largely influenced by her ongoing battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which her agency revealed in late 2023.

Certain work scenarios triggered extreme anxiety, and over time, tasks she once handled effortlessly became increasingly challenging.

She announced via her blog in January 2025 that her summer concert tour would be her last, emphasising her desire to leave the industry on a high note, sharing laughter and joy with fans until the very end.

The final show, themed SAYUMINGLANDOLL〜SAMSALA〜, ran for roughly two and a half hours and saw fans dressed in pink T-shirts emblazoned with slogans like “Saikou Michishige” and “Michishige Mutual Love.”

Choosing an intimate, fan-focused farewell, Michishige excluded press coverage, focusing solely on connecting with the crowd that had supported her for over two decades.

Born on July 13, 1989, in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Michishige was selected from around 14,000 auditionees to join Morning Musume alongside Kamei Eri and Tanaka Reina, forming what would later be known as the “legendary sixth generation.”

Despite an initial slow start due to her inexperience, she carved out a niche for herself with her charismatic personality, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on J-pop and idol culture.

In her retirement announcement, Michishige Sayumi wrote, “Over 22 years in entertainment, my fans have always been by my side. I am filled with gratitude. For the next few months until my farewell tour, I will give everything I can, and spend time laughing and enjoying myself with my beloved fans.”

Her words reflected a career built not only on talent but also on a unique ability to connect with and inspire those who followed her journey.

As the lights dimmed on Zepp Diver City and Michishige Sayumi took her final bow, fans collectively celebrated more than just an idol—they celebrated an icon who truly refused to age, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
