Aoi Wakana & Kamio Fuju to Lead Bittersweet New Romance Drama 'Subete no Koi ga Owaru to Shite mo'

From viral tweets to Sunday night drama — the “140-character heartbreaks” get the TV treatment.

Japanese TV just keeps finding fresh ways to tug at our heartstrings, and ABC TV’s latest announcement is no exception. Coming this October 2025, the network is launching a brand-new romantic drama titled Subete no Koi ga Owaru to Shite mo/すべての恋が終わるとしても (Even If Every Love Ends) aka SubeKoi, starring Aoi Wakana and Kamio Fuju as the lead couple.

The drama will air every Sunday night at 10:15 pm and is based on the popular short story collection by Fuyuno Yozora — the same one that blew up on social media for its painfully relatable love stories told in just 140 characters.

✦ From artroom to adulthood: A slow-burn love with real-world stakes

Set in the gentle chaos of growing up, the story follows high school classmates Yuu Hazawa (played by Aoi Wakana) and Mao Osaki (played by Kamio Fuju), who first bond over their shared love of art. They start dating at graduation, believing they've found something truly rare and fated.

But as they head to different universities and enter the next phase of life, the cracks begin to show. With distance and time testing their connection, their so-called “destined love” becomes anything but simple.

Alongside Yuu and Mao, the show introduces a web of interconnected relationships featuring eight characters — each one navigating their own version of love, heartbreak, and quiet personal growth. From first crushes to farewells, it’s all wrapped in that slightly nostalgic, sometimes painful tone we know all too well.

The drama’s tagline says it best:
“Someone’s love ending is someone else’s love beginning. All love stories are connected.”

So yes, expect tissues. But also, a bit of hope.

✦ Aoi Wakana & Kamio Fuju: First-time co-stars, loaded with chemistry

This marks the first time Aoi Wakana and Kamio Fuju will share the screen as romantic leads — and the buzz is already building. Aoi, best known for her starring role in NHK's Warotenka, has carved out a rep for playing emotionally rich characters, even juggling dual roles in last year’s stage hit The Good Person of Szechwan.

Kamio, meanwhile, has been non-stop with high-profile roles — from The Best Teacher to the 2025 rescue-action drama PJ Air Rescue Unit, and most recently the whimsical Who Did I Fall in Love With? He’s built a fanbase for his cool, unreadable vibe — but this time, we might be seeing a softer side.

Speaking about her character, Aoi Wakana says:

“It’s a story full of subtle sadness, not just about love beginning or ending, but about the changes we all go through in our teens and twenties. I really connected with that. And working with Kamio-san has been so easy — he's unexpectedly chill and very easy to chat with!”

Kamio Fuju adds:

“The script made my chest tighten. Mao is a soft soul, but also mysterious in a way. And Aoi-san… she's insanely focused in rehearsals, but also fun once the cameras are off. Oh, and her posture is perfect, by the way.”

Aoi Wakana & Kamio Fuju Reunite in October 2025 for SubeKoi Drama

✦ From Twitter threads to TV screens: The rise of “SubeKoi”

The original book Subete no Koi ga Owaru to Shite mo gained traction on the old-school Twitter (pre-X) with author Fuyuno Yozora crafting tiny love stories — 140 characters each — that captured fleeting moments of heartbreak. Fans loved it for being so compact yet so emotionally precise. The book series has since sold over 550,000 copies.

For this adaptation, screenwriter Kisa Miura (known for Eye Love You and It's Not Just About the Face) cherry-picked eight standout episodes from the full 146 to weave a cohesive eight-part TV narrative. The goal? Keep the emotional intensity of the short format, but flesh it out with layered performances, subtle direction, and a warm, nostalgic vibe.

Yozora shared her excitement, saying:

“To see these micro-stories evolve into a full TV drama is surreal. I hope the drama adds colour and movement to the words I wrote — and that people can watch and reflect on their own 'unfinished' loves.”

If you're into realistic romance — the kind that doesn't always tie itself up neatly with a bow — this one’s worth marking on your calendar. It's emotional without being too melodramatic, soft without being boring, and anchored by two strong leads who already seem to have real chemistry. And for anyone who’s ever fallen in love too young, or watched something special fade away with time… yeah, you might cry a little.
