Jeremy Lin has officially hung up his sneakers. On 31 August 2025 today, the Taiwanese-American star confirmed his retirement at the age of 37, bringing an emotional close to a 15-year professional career that redefined what was possible for Asian-American athletes in global basketball.

A Farewell Letter from the Heart

Jeremy Lin announced the news via a heartfelt social media letter, calling it “the hardest decision” of his life.

“Actually saying goodbye to basketball today has been the hardest decision I've ever made. I will forever be the kid who felt fully alive every time I touched a basketball,” he wrote.

Jeremy Lin stressed that while he always knew this day would come, the reality of letting go was tougher than expected.

He described his journey as “the honour of a lifetime to compete against the fiercest competitors under the brightest lights and to challenge what the world thought was possible for someone who looks like me.”

Jeremy Lin Officially Retires at 37

Jeremy Lin’s career is the stuff of sports folklore. Undrafted out of Harvard, he fought through the system until his unforgettable breakout with the New York Knicks in 2012 — the “Linsanity” era that captured the world’s attention.

For weeks, Lin was the NBA’s headline act, carrying the Knicks on an improbable winning streak and proving that underdogs could rewrite the script.

Making History and Breaking Barriers

Across nine NBA seasons, Lin suited up for eight teams, constantly adapting, constantly fighting. In 2019, he made history as the first Asian-American to win an NBA championship, lifting the trophy with the Toronto Raptors.

Beyond the NBA, Lin went global. He became a huge draw in Asia, starring for the Beijing Ducks in the CBA and later boosting Taiwan’s P. League+ where he played his final games earlier this year.

Everywhere he went, he inspired fans who saw themselves reflected on the court for the first time.

Lin’s retirement has already sparked waves of tributes from teammates, fans, and fellow athletes, all recognising his role in breaking barriers.

While he hasn’t revealed his next step, Lin hinted at a new chapter, saying: “Our time will go beyond just playing... Here’s to what’s ahead.”

His farewell video ended not with highlights or stats, but with a warm family shot alongside his wife and son — a reminder that after years of relentless grind, Lin is ready to enjoy life off the court.

Chinese actor Dylan Wang Hedi, well-known for his close friendship with Jeremy Lin, also featured in the conversation earlier this year when the two reunited for a candid chat.

Their bond off the court is another reminder of Lin’s wider cultural impact beyond just sport.
