My Girlfriend Is the Man! Adaptation vs Webtoon: What’s Different and What Works |
Korean rom-com series My Girlfriend Is the Man! has fans buzzing—not just because it’s a laugh-out-loud, gender-bending story, but also because it takes a few unexpected detours from its original webtoon, 내 여자친구는 상남자 by Massstar.
The story follows Park Yun Jae (Yoon San-ha) navigating life after his stunning girlfriend Kim Ji Eun (Arin) suddenly wakes up as a guy. Now called Ji-Hoon (played by Yoo Jung-hoo), she—and Yun Jae—must figure out how to survive this bizarre, fantastical twist.
Fans of the webtoon might notice the changes straight away, and that’s no accident. Since the comic was still ongoing when the series aired, the writers clearly had to take creative liberties to make the live-action work. Here are six big ways the show shakes up the story.

1. From Solo Life to Sister Squad
In the webtoon, Ji Eun is living on her own, flying solo through life’s ups and downs. The live-action series, however, adds a major change: Ji Eun shares a flat with her older sister, Kim Ji Hye (Choi Yoon-ra). This opens up new sibling dynamics, arguments, and comedic moments that the solo-living webtoon version couldn’t explore.
2. Sibling Shuffle
Speaking of siblings, here’s another tweak: the original comic gave Ji Eun three older brothers she rarely sees. The live-action streamlines her family, leaving her with only one sibling, her sister. This choice clearly makes family interactions easier to follow on screen while giving the sister more story space.

3. Ji Eun’s Female Side Gets More Spotlight
In the comic, the focus leans heavily on Ji Eun’s struggle as Ji-Hoon, the male form. In contrast, the series gives Arin, who plays Ji Eun, a lot of screen time through flashbacks and imagination sequences where Yun Jae sees Ji-Hoon as Ji Eun.
This allows the audience to keep a connection with Ji Eun’s original personality, likely because Arin is a big-name actress and a primary draw for viewers.
4. Curse Clarity from the Get-Go
A big narrative shift: while the comic keeps Ji Eun mostly clueless about why she turns into a guy, the live-action series spells it out early.
Ji Eun and her sister are aware it’s a generational curse from their mother’s side. They even get matching tattoos to mark themselves in case the curse hits again—a clever visual cue that adds drama and intrigue.

5. Family Flashbacks Take a Bold Turn
The show doesn’t stop at sibling tattoos. In the first few episodes, we get a flashback of Ji Eun’s parents showing old photos where their dad appears with a man, supposedly their mom! It’s a quirky, bold addition that adds mystery—but also raises questions. If the mother knows about the curse, why doesn’t she clue the sisters in on how to reverse it?
6. A Sister’s Romantic Sub-Plot
One of the most noticeable changes is that Ji Eun’s sister, Ji Hye, gets her own romantic subplot. In the webtoon, the siblings mostly stay in the background, so this is a new layer for viewers. Some fans love the extra drama and comedy this brings, while purists might feel it distracts from the main Ji Eun–Yun Jae story.

These are just some of the ways My Girlfriend Is the Man! live-action sets itself apart from the webtoon. Whether you prefer the original comic’s focus on Ji-Hoon’s challenges or the show’s expanded character dynamics, it’s clear the adaptation isn’t afraid to experiment.
Which changes did you love, and which ones felt a bit “too much”?
