| XiX at Risk of Disbanding as Eric Kwok Opens Up About Industry Pressures |
“If there’s no breakthrough this time, we’ve got to be mentally ready.”
Hong Kong producer and songwriter Eric Kwok has opened up about the uncertain future of rising girl group XiX, revealing some sobering truths about the realities of managing a young idol group in a cutthroat, small-scale industry.
At the launch event for XiX’s brand-new single, “You Don’t Understand”, Eric candidly shared his hopes for the group — as well as his concerns that this latest release might be their last under Universal Music.
“I really hope they don’t disband just because we run out of songs to release,” he admitted. “But it’s honestly very expensive to keep a girl group going.”
Tight Budget, Big Dreams
With only four members — all still juggling school and idol life — XiX has always been run a little differently. Their entire management team consists of just Eric, his wife, and one close colleague, making them more of a passion project than a typical idol machine.

“The Hong Kong market is so small, and girl groups are everywhere now. It’s crazy competitive,” Eric explained. “Every time we try to put out a new track, we have to be super careful — the risk is high.”
And with Universal reportedly cutting costs, that pressure is mounting.
“Supporting rookie idols always loses money in the beginning. I don’t even know exactly how much we’ve spent already. Music videos, promotions, everything adds up,” Eric said. “The company told us we need to start turning a profit soon.”
No Set Targets, But Warning Signs Are There
When asked if Universal had set any hard benchmarks for the group, Eric said there was no exact KPI or quota — but the message was loud and clear.
“They just said if there’s no major breakthrough with this comeback, we should be psychologically prepared,” he said, hinting that “You Don’t Understand” might end up being their final push under the label.

XiX: “We’re Not Worried” – Just Focused on the Present
Despite the looming uncertainty, the members of XiX are keeping their heads held high.
In a brief comment during the launch, the girls said they were focused on doing their best with the new track.
“We’re not really worried whether this is our last song or not,” one member said. “We’ll treat every stage like it could be our last — that’s how much it means to us.”
For now, fans can still support “You Don’t Understand”, a catchy pop number with strong emotional undertones — fitting, given the situation surrounding the group. But whether this is truly XiX’s swan song or just another stepping stone remains to be seen.
