Viewers Praise Miles Wei’s Emotional Portrayal in In the Name of Blossom Amid Slow Plot Criticism

In the Name of Blossom — the much-hyped sequel to Flourished Peony, headlined by Yang Zi and Li Xian — was meant to take the Chinese drama charts by storm. But after hitting screens, the buzz fizzled out faster than a dodgy sparkler, leaving fans moaning about its clunky, padded-out storyline.

Critics, including World Journal, were quick to point out the slow, repetitive pace that made the drama feel like it was stuck on a loop instead of properly diving into its new chapter. Yet in the middle of this lukewarm reception, one unexpected hero (or rather, anti-hero) rose to become the talk of the town — none other than supporting actor Miles Wei.

Playing Liu Chang, the obsessive ex-husband of He Wei Fang, Miles Wei Zheming absolutely nailed the twisted layers of a man refusing to let go of the past.

Through every haunted glance and subtle gesture, he pulled viewers straight into Liu Chang’s shattered heart. A highlight was a tearful confession scene so raw and painful that audiences were torn between wanting to slap him and just giving him a big comforting hug.

If his on-screen performance wasn’t enough, Miles Wei also won hearts off-screen with his cheeky sense of humour. Social media exploded with debates about whether his height was more 1.7 metres or 1.8 metres, as he looked suspiciously taller in some scenes than others.

Instead of getting grumpy about it, Miles cracked everyone up by joking that yes, he did “switch between 1.7 and 1.8” depending on the scene. His down-to-earth vibe and quick wit only made fans adore him more, with many praising how relatable and humble he seems compared to the usual stiff celeb types.

Fans of Chinese dramas might already know Miles as the “sweet romance drama specialist,” thanks to hits like You Are My Secret and Perfect and Casual

Originally a civil servant before switching to acting at 26, Miles Wei has been quietly making his name with solid supporting roles in everything from Word of Honor to slice-of-life romances. Even though he’s sometimes called the “eternal supporting actor,” plenty reckon he’s long had leading man material, just waiting for the right moment to break through.

It seems In the Name of Blossom may have flopped story-wise, but Miles Wei’s performance — and that brilliant off-screen banter — turned him into the drama’s true breakout star.
