| Matsumura Hokuto to Headline Live-Action Adaptation of “Byosoku 5 Centimeters” |
The 2007 anime classic returns with a human touch – and a fresh star-studded line-up. Out this October.
Eighteen years after Byōsoku 5 Centimeter (5 Centimetres per Second) first tugged on our heartstrings with cherry blossoms, distance, and unspoken feelings, the iconic Shinkai Makoto film is making its live-action debut.
Slated for release on 10 October 2025, the film is led by SixTONES’ Matsumura Hokuto in his first-ever solo lead role in a film — and he's not coming alone.

Joining the journey of fleeting youth, love lost in transit, and the ache of time are some brilliant names from Japan’s new-gen and seasoned acting scene:
-
Aoki Yuzu plays Toono Takaki during his high school years — the awkward, soft-spoken boy carrying a heart full of what-ifs.
-
Mori Nana takes on Sumida Kanae, Takaki’s high school classmate from Tanegashima, quietly struggling with her unrequited feelings.
-
Kiryu Mai steps in as Mizuno Risa, Takaki’s colleague during his working life — a subtle but pivotal presence in the third act.
-
Miyazaki Aoi, ever elegant, plays Koshimizu Midori, Kanae’s older sister and a high school teacher.
-
And Yoshioka Hidetaka rounds things out as the kindly director of the science museum, a quiet observer in Takaki’s adult world.
🎶 One More Time, One More Chance – Again
And yes — that song is back. The film’s signature ballad, Yamazaki Masayoshi’s soul-stirring “One more time, One more chance,” will feature in a remastered version, making sure nostalgia hits right where it hurts — beautifully.

💔 So What’s the Story This Time Around?
Still based on Shinkai Makoto’s 2007 anime film — his third ever — the live-action remake will follow the original triptych format, tracing 18 years of longing through the stories Cherry Blossom Extract, Cosmonaut, and the titular 5 Centimetres per Second.
The film tells the story of Toono Takaki and Shinohara Akari, who bond deeply as kids but are forced apart when Akari moves away. Despite their distance, they stay connected through heartfelt letters — until life, time, and the inevitability of growing up begin to pull them in different directions.
From a fateful reunion under a snowy cherry blossom tree, to the quiet heartbreak of missed chances in adulthood, this is a story of love not lost, but suspended — always lingering in memory.
🌸 A Film That’s As Much About Place As It Is About People
Director Okuyama Yoshiyuki, known for his poetic visuals and work in music videos and short films, is at the helm for this real-world version. He’s brought along Suzuki Fumiko (Love Will Tear Us Apart) for the screenplay, promising an emotionally grounded, richly textured take.
Filming took place across key locations from the original anime, including Tokyo and Tanegashima, with special attention paid to seasonal detail — cherry blossoms, summer skies, snowfall, and the sea — just like Shinkai intended.

⏱️ Why Now?
With Shinkai's recent string of mega-hits (Weathering With You, Suzume), it feels like the perfect moment to revisit the quieter, more melancholic roots of his storytelling. “This is the work that built the emotional language of my later films,” Shinkai commented. “Seeing a passionate team reinterpret it in live-action — I couldn’t be more excited.”
This film isn't about explosions or spectacle. It’s about moments — the ones that pass too quickly, or never happen at all. And this live-action adaptation aims to give them a second chance.
