Once a rising star in Hong Kong’s entertainment scene, singer Steven Cheung has made a heartfelt appeal for help on Instagram after receiving a lease termination notice from his landlord – the latest blow in a long stretch of financial hardship.

The 40-year-old former Boy’z member revealed that his family of six is now facing the terrifying possibility of losing their home. In a recent post, Cheung simply wrote: “Is there anyone who can help me?” – a desperate call that quickly caught the attention of fans and followers.

His wife, Au Yin Man, also took to social media to explain the situation in more detail. According to her, their landlord had already granted them “two months of leniency,” but could no longer wait. The family pays HK$15,000 (around US$1,900) per month in rent – a figure that’s pushed them to their limits for some time now.

Things aren’t looking any easier. With limited income and skyrocketing expenses – Steven Cheung previously mentioned their monthly outgoings exceed HK$30,000 – Au admitted they’re struggling to find a new place within their means. She also expressed fears that they might be forced to turn to emergency shelter services, which could end in the family being separated.

Trying to hold things together, Steven Cheung has been hustling through various odd jobs over the years – from food delivery and handing out fliers to doing electrical cable work and construction gigs. He’s even distributed condoms to make ends meet. Last month, he posted on Instagram: “I’m in urgent need of a job opportunity, requiring HK$6,800 today. Help me.”

It’s a stark contrast to the height of his fame. Cheung debuted in 2003 with the boy band Boy’z (later rebranded as Sun Boy’z), quickly becoming a familiar face in Hong Kong’s music industry and picking up several awards.

But after the group’s disbandment in 2008, his solo career never quite hit the same highs. Acting roles were few and far between, and by 2019, his image took a further hit after a cheating scandal involving multiple women – including actress April Leung – exploded into the public eye.

Cheung married Au that same year, but rebuilding both his career and reputation has proven a tough road. Steady work in showbiz has been hard to come by, and with four young kids to feed, the pressure is mounting fast.

Fans have expressed sympathy and concern online, with many hoping someone in the entertainment industry will offer him a hand – or at least a job. But for now, Cheung and his family are simply hoping for a miracle to keep a roof over their heads.
