“She’s Always Gushing About Her Baby!” – Yang Mi’s Mate Shuts Down Mum-Shaming Rumours |
Yang Mi’s been a household name in Chinese entertainment for over a decade now—known for her flawless visuals, versatile roles, and non-stop work schedule. But ever since her split with actor Hawick Lau back in 2018, she’s found herself in the crosshairs of the internet rumour mill, especially when it comes to her daughter, Xiao Nuomi.
For years, netizens have speculated about her relationship—or supposed lack thereof—with her daughter. Fuel was added to the fire when Hawick’s dad, veteran actor Liu Dan, kept answering vaguely in interviews about whether Yang Mi sees her child. His “I don’t know” and “Haven’t seen it” replies left space for all sorts of harsh assumptions online, with some folks accusing Yang Mi of being an absent mum.

But that narrative’s just taken a big turn. During a lighthearted chat on a variety show aired 2 June 2025, actress Xie Yilin—known for her comedic roles and her long-time friendship with Yang Mi—spilled the beans on the real story. And honestly, it paints a very different picture.
Xie Yilin, who grew close with Yang Mi on the set of Tiny Times, recalled how Mi-jie (as friends affectionately call her) was actually full of love and excitement when she first became a mum. “She used to go on and on about how cute her baby was,” Xie laughed, adding that Yang Mi would constantly gush about Xiao Nuomi in private. “She’d show off photos like any proud mum—just not publicly.”

Turns out, Yang Mi was already pregnant while filming Tiny Times, and Xie remembered teasing her about not fitting into pleated school skirts during a high school dance scene. At that point, Yang Mi was already four months along, and filming carried on until her eighth month. But rather than slow down, Yang Mi stayed active on set, passionately pushing for better storylines and performance quality. “She scared me with how sharp and professional she was, even while pregnant,” Xie joked.
Over the years, however, media coverage didn’t always show that side. Hawick was frequently snapped picking Xiao Nuomi up from school or taking her on holiday, while Yang Mi’s time with her daughter was largely kept under wraps. Some reports even claimed she’d only spent 37 days with her daughter over a three-year period—an accusation that quickly went viral and caused quite a stir
But according to Xie, those numbers don’t tell the full story. “That’s not the Yang Mi I know,” she said firmly. “She never forgot she’s a mum first. She just keeps it low-key.”
And netizens in Hong Kong seem to back that up. Sharp-eyed fans have spotted Yang Mi quietly popping in for visits, including one sighting in April this year at the Hong Kong High-Speed Rail Station, reportedly heading to see Xiao Nuomi.

Yang Mi’s not the type to shout about her private life—and clearly, that’s a conscious choice. But this rare bit of behind-the-scenes insight from someone who knows her well offers a refreshing perspective. Far from the cold, career-obsessed image painted by online speculation, Yang Mi is, in her close friends’ eyes, just a soft-hearted mum who chooses to love her daughter away from the limelight.
So maybe it’s time we all lay off the snap judgments. After all, being a mum doesn’t always look the same for everyone—especially when you’re navigating parenthood under a magnifying glass.
