Looks like musical blood runs deep in the Teng family. The K-pop world just got a bit more nostalgic with the entrance of Deng Jiajun, the 22-year-old nephew of legendary Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, into the second season of Mnet’s mega survival show, BOYS II PLANET.

Yup, you heard that right — while the original BOYS PLANET made waves with its cross-border lineup and dramatic rankings, the sequel’s already serving heritage, headlines and high expectations before it’s even started airing.

Among the 74 hopefuls representing Greater China in BOYS II PLANET C, contestant No. 148 — Deng Jiajun — is turning heads thanks to his famous bloodline.

Meet Contestant No.148: Teresa Teng’s Nephew Deng Jiajun Joins K-Pop Idol Search

Jiajun, who stands at 1.8 metres tall and previously worked at a luxury boutique, is one of nine Taiwanese trainees in the line-up. But it’s his connection to the late Teresa Teng — often dubbed Asia’s eternal songbird — that’s got netizens talking. His father, Jim Teng, was Teresa’s youngest brother.

When Taiwanese media reached out for confirmation, Teresa’s older brother Frank Teng, who chairs the Deng Lijun (Teresa Teng) Foundation, said candidly:

“Yes, Jiajun is my younger brother Changxi’s son. He joined the show purely out of personal interest and for fun. We appreciate the attention he’s received.”

Frank was quick to clarify that there’s no pressure from the family or any attempt to cash in on Teresa Teng’s legacy — Jiajun simply enjoys music and decided to try something new. Still, many fans reckon the spotlight will follow him naturally, especially given Teresa’s enduring influence across generations in the Mandarin-speaking world.

Teresa Teng, who passed away in 1995, remains an icon in Asian music, with evergreen hits like “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin” and “Tian Mi Mi” continuing to move hearts. Her voice shaped an era — and now her nephew may be ready to carve his own path, albeit in a very different corner of the music world.

According to reports, Jiajun’s dad, Jim Teng, sadly passed away in 2008 due to an aneurysm while in Shanghai. He was 55.

As for the show, BOYS II PLANET is taking a slightly different format this time around. Contestants have been split into two camps:

  • Boys II Planet K – featuring Korean, Japanese, Thai, and other global trainees.

  • Boys II Planet C – exclusively for Chinese-speaking contestants.

Both groups will eventually merge, with the top trainees forming a brand-new idol group at the end. The competition’s first half kicks off with Planet K airing on July 17, and Planet C premiering on July 18.

Whether Deng Jiajun ends up debuting or not, one thing’s clear — with his roots and rising attention, the journey ahead is bound to be watched closely. After all, it’s not every day the nephew of a music legend steps onto the K-pop stage.

Let’s see if the next chapter in the Teng family’s musical story starts here.
