"Job hunting in Shenzhen is actually laughable at this point." That’s how one frustrated jobseeker described her experience after applying for a role at a dessert shop in Shenzhen — only to find the contract demanding 16-hour workdays and just 2 days off per month.

On 24 June, the store manager admitted those terms were indeed in the contract, but dismissed it lightly, saying: “It’s a mutual agreement, nothing more.”

But the local labour department took a firmer stance, confirming that such conditions violate labour laws and that workers are within their rights to file a complaint.

Ms Zhao (pseudonym), who shared her experience online, told reporters from Shangyou News that she recently applied for a server position at [** Dessert Shop] in Donglong New Village, Longhua District. The contract she was given stated:

  • “If you leave within 3 days, you won’t be paid for trial work.”

  • “All positions: 2 rest days per month. Any non-scheduled rest is considered overtime.”

  • “Shifts: 11AM–3AM (includes meals & accommodation), or 1PM–3AM (no meals, accommodation included).”

  • “Strictly no phone use or sleeping during shifts — ¥50 will be deducted each time you’re caught sleeping.”

Zhao explained: “You get only 8 hours off per day, and that includes showering, getting changed, and sleeping. Of course you’ll be dozing off the next day — but if you get caught, you’re fined.”

On 23 June, she took to the internet to share her story and warn others looking for work in Shenzhen, sparking heated discussion across social media.
