Atmosphere Shifts at 64-Year-Old J-Pop Idol Duo’s Show After Ambulance Called (NikkanSports) |
myun & yayo, dubbed “the idols closest to heaven”, proved they’re still full of spark (and surprises) at their latest concert on 21 June – blending bubbly Showa-era tunes with an actual seminar on end-of-life planning. Yep, seriously.
Held at the Nippon Broadcasting Imagine Studio in Yurakucho, Tokyo, the duo – both 64 years old and proud of it – performed 18 nostalgic bangers from the golden days of Japanese idol pop. From Pink Lady’s “UFO” to Seiko Matsuda and Candies classics, it was a total throwback fest.
But the twist? Between mic changes and frilly costume swaps, they hosted a seminar about preparing for the end of life. Cue raised eyebrows – and a surprisingly emotional vibe.
The crowd? A surprisingly youthful bunch in their 20s and 30s, all vibing hard to the retro setlist. But the atmosphere turned briefly serious before the show even kicked off – when one fan fainted and had to be carried out by ambulance staff.
That unexpected moment may’ve made the audience even more attentive when the life-planning segment rolled around, led in collab with Nichiryoku and radio programme “Seikatsu no Madoguchi”.
Dressed first in yellow lacey dresses and later in shoulder-baring, pastel mini-dresses straight out of a 70s idol fever dream, myun & yayo had the whole room twirling glowsticks like it was 1980. “Together we’re 128 years old – the idols closest to heaven!” they grinned, working the stage like seasoned pros.

Their journey? Pure drama. Fukuoka-born myun once chased her idol dreams to Tokyo after being scouted by composer Hirao Masaaki, even acting in dramas like “Asahigaoka no Daitoryo” before stepping back to marry and raise a family. Tokyo native yayo had a brush with the media world too, assisting on TBS radio and telly during her student days, before opting for the OL life.
The two met at their kids’ kindergarten PTA 25 years ago, became fast friends, and eventually reunited over their shared love of music.
What started as a “mum jam” project turned into an actual idol unit, debuting officially in 2012 as myun & yayo. They dropped their first album in 2018 – full of sparkly covers and Showa tributes – and have been entertaining with a wink and a hip shake ever since.

Their ultimate goal? “We want to make it to Kōhaku Uta Gassen! We’re challenging the norm, age be damned,” they said, all sparkles and smiles. They’re also keen to pop up on more variety shows.
And look, whether they’re belting out “Pepper Keibu” or chatting about wills and funeral plans mid-concert, one thing’s for sure – myun & yayo are ageing like fine sake. A little fizzy, full of punch, and still lighting up the stage.
