Live-Action Island of Siliang Hype Grows—But Liu Yuning Isn’t Onboard (Yet?) (Pics: WeTV) |
So, is Liu Yuning heading to the mysterious island of Siliang? Not quite—at least, not yet.
Over the weekend, Chinese social media lit up with whispers that Liu Yuning had been tapped to play Jing Xuan, the male lead in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Island of Siliang (《眷思量》), the highly acclaimed donghua and manhua series known for its stunning visuals and deeply emotional storytelling. Fans of the series went into a frenzy, some thrilled by the idea, others curious about how the fantasy-heavy animation would translate to live-action.
But just as quickly as the rumour spread, Liu Yuning himself stepped in to set the record straight.
“Haven’t even seen the script. Haha,” the singer-actor wrote casually on his Weibo, pairing the response with a Polaroid-style snap of himself enjoying Italy—where he's currently shooting a variety show. No studio lights, no island, just good vibes and a cheeky grin.

“Haven’t Even Seen the Script!” — Liu Yuning Responds to Island of Siliang Buzz |
Netizens were amused by the speed of his response. “He must be sitting on a router,” one fan quipped, borrowing a popular Chinese phrase used for people who react to news faster than the Wi-Fi can handle. It’s not the first time Liu’s shown he’s got a sense of humour when it comes to the rumour mill—and fans are loving it.
That said, the excitement around The Island of Siliang going live-action isn’t dying down any time soon.
Originally released as a 3D donghua, Siliang has carved out a loyal following thanks to its gorgeously detailed animation, haunting soundtrack, and mature themes.
Set on a remote island where exiled immortals are stuck atoning for their past transgressions, the story weaves mythology, politics, and soul-searching into a slow-burn narrative. Think high fantasy meets emotional healing—with a heavy dose of destiny and regret.
The original series is praised for not talking down to its audience, offering complex characters, layered world-building, and a tone that feels more like a prestige drama than a cartoon. Fans have long hoped for a live-action version—but expectations are sky-high, and casting speculation is naturally a minefield.
So far, no official casting announcements have been made. But given the online buzz—and Liu Yuning’s unexpectedly viral denial—it’s clear the project is already on people’s radars. Whether or not he ends up getting the call, fans are definitely keeping their eyes peeled for updates.
Until then, it looks like Jing Xuan remains uncast—and Liu Yuning remains blissfully unbothered in Italy.
