Liu Yuning’s Popularity Soars as The Prisoner of Beauty Wins Fans at Home and Abroad

But it’s not just Liu Yuning who’s winning here. The Prisoner of Beauty itself has been smashing records left and right. Maoyan’s data reports over 800 million effective streams, with the show consistently topping Tencent Video’s yearly popularity charts. Clearly, viewers are hooked.

What’s even more impressive is how the drama’s appeal has crossed borders. Since its Netflix debut, The Prisoner of Beauty has landed firmly in the Top Ten across multiple countries.

FlixPatrol reveals it ranked second in Taiwan and third in Vietnam, while in Malaysia & Singapore, it stood out as the only Chinese drama to crack the Top Ten all through May 2025, snagging the eighth spot. Not bad at all for a show that’s just getting started internationally!

The Prisoner of Beauty Breaks Records, Liu Yuning Sees Huge Fan Growth

Adding a cool behind-the-scenes twist, the show’s screenwriter Nan Zhen recently opened up about the creative process. In a June 1 interview with the public account “Yu Li,” Nan Zhen shared she was a big fan of the original novel The Prisoner of Beauty

When drafting the final script, she imagined the male lead perfectly matching Liu Yuning’s vibe — someone with the regal presence of an emperor or general, standing tall and proud. She described him as tough yet heroic, a perfect fit for Wei Shao, the character Liu Yuning brought to life.

No wonder fans are so smitten. Between Liu Yuning’s magnetic screen presence and the drama’s gripping storyline, The Prisoner of Beauty is proving it’s a hit that’s more than just skin deep.
