“I Want to Go Viral Again”: Komuro Tetsuya’s Bold Dive into the Underground Idol Scene with Short Drama

Legendary music producer Komuro Tetsuya, 66, is back — but this time, not just with a killer soundtrack. At the recent DMM Premium/DMM TV announcement event, Komuro revealed he’s taking on the role of general producer for a brand-new short drama titled Moikkai Basuritai — which translates roughly as I Want to Be Viral Again.

The premise? It’s about a former commercial hitmaker who once ruled the music world but now finds himself drifting in a lonely, forgotten place. Everything changes when he crosses paths with Aiko — a determined young woman who, despite being rejected by family and society, keeps chasing her dream of singing. Her raw talent sparks a fire in him, and together they dive headfirst into the tough, gritty world of underground idols.

What unfolds is a gripping story of rebirth and resilience, where an unlikely trio — including a girl who’s faced bullying and a former fighter who’s given up on his dreams — band together. Using the power of social media and live shows as their weapons, they fight to claw their way back into the spotlight, rediscovering hope and value through music.

Komuro Tetsuya shared his excitement about the project, noting that while he’s been behind the music for countless dramas over the years, this marks the first time he’s had a chance to produce a drama from the ground up.

Komuro Tetsuya Takes On Short Drama Production and Songwriting

He seems particularly enthused by the short drama’s bite-sized format — each episode will run just three minutes long, similar to the length of a music video. “I get the scale instantly, and it really caught my interest,” he said.

Talking about the creative direction, Tetsuya Komuro admitted the story is a reflection of the changing times. “Maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned, but I thought, why not push myself a bit more?” he laughed. The script itself is fresh off the press — literally written on the day of the announcement — and even the final title isn’t locked down yet, keeping the project feeling vibrant and new.

And Komuro Tetsuya’s involvement doesn’t stop at producing. He’s also writing the songs for the drama’s underground idol theme. With the concept of the music nearly finalised, he’s aiming high.

“Short dramas haven’t really had a hit song yet — I want to change that. I want to go viral again,” he joked, clearly serious about the challenge. To keep things authentic, he’s taking casting very seriously, ensuring the music and performances ring true to the underground scene’s reality.

DMM TV, the platform backing the series, is gearing up to launch full-scale distribution of vertical-format short dramas from June. Their content buffet includes anime, variety shows, 2.5D plays, stage musicals, and now, these fresh, bite-sized dramas — perfect for the fast-scrolling generation.

All in all, Komuro Tetsuya’s latest venture looks like an exciting mix of nostalgia, grit, and hope — with a soundtrack that’s ready to make some serious noise.
