Zhang Jingyi Dishes on Filming with Xiao Zhan for Legend of Zang Hai and Her Dream Drama Comeback

Zhang Jingyi’s still got Legend of Zang Hai fresh in her mind, and lucky for us, she’s not shy about sharing. The actress popped up on the 216th episode of Star Colleagues this week and gave fans the full scoop—from Xiao Zhan’s vibe on set to her own dream future roles.

Jingyi, who plays the headstrong Princess Xiang Antu (aka “Princess Tutu”), lit up when talking about how much detail went into bringing her character to life. “She’s got these step-shaking ornaments, an abacus, all sorts of bits to make her feel more alive,” she explained, noting that even small props helped shape Tutu’s confident but calculating persona.

Her first scene had her opening a door—simple, right? Not quite. Director Zheng Xiaolong apparently had a very clear vision. “It sounds easy, but I was so nervous,” she laughed. “The direction was very specific, which made me really focus.”

One of her fave scenes (other than Kiss Scene)? That tense little back-and-forth where Princess Tutu and Zang Hai are testing each other with hidden meanings. “They’re speaking in codes, almost. No one says exactly what they mean. It was like playing a spy,” she grinned. Naturally, when asked what song would fit their dynamic, she didn’t miss a beat: “Something like James Bond or Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Definitely spy music.”

And of course, we had to talk Xiao Zhan. Jingyi had nothing but praise. “He’s honestly very serious about his work. Always chatting with the director, thinking about how to adjust scenes, tweaking little things. Super professional.” That effort clearly paid off—fans can’t stop talking about their chemistry.

As for the fan nickname “mommy” floating around online, she cracked up. “It’s wild! I mean, wouldn’t anyone be shocked if they’re suddenly called mum?”

But here’s the real tea: Zhang Jingyi’s already dreaming up her next collab with Xiao Zhan. “I’d love to do a modern revenge drama with him,” she teased. “I want to play a rich girl who comes back from abroad, and he could be a super fierce CEO. Sparks would fly!”

With Legend of Zang Hai still pulling big numbers and fans begging for a sequel (or spin-off, or anything with this pair, really), we wouldn’t be surprised if someone greenlights that idea soon. In the meantime, Jingyi’s mix of playful charm and thoughtful insight is keeping the buzz alive—and making us all want to rewatch those coded-glance scenes just one more time
