Hiroshi Abe Praises Alyssa Chia’s Acting Chops in English-Laced Japanese Thriller ‘Candlestick’ |
Taiwanese actress Alyssa Chia is absolutely buzzing about her latest big-screen move – stepping into the sleek world of Japanese cinema with none other than Hiroshi Abe in the upcoming high-tech thriller Candlestick.
The pair hit the red carpet in Tokyo this week for the film’s premiere, where Alyssa couldn’t hide her excitement about taking on something completely different.
“No one’s ever asked me to play a character like this before,” she said, referring to her role as a ruthless senior executive at a Taiwanese firm caught in a tangled web of AI-driven financial crime. “That’s what made me say yes – plus, who wouldn’t want to work with Japan’s film king Hiroshi Abe?”

Candlestick isn’t just your average heist flick. Based on Tetsuhiko Kawamura’s novel Soshikiri: FX Simulation Success Story, the story dives headfirst into the murky waters of AI, algorithmic trading, and financial deceit.
It follows Nohara (played by Abe Hiroshi), a former white-hat hacker who’s lost everything and sets out to take down the seemingly untouchable AI system guarding the foreign exchange markets – all in hopes of winning big.
Alyssa Chia's character? She’s no damsel in distress – more like a corporate shark who’s got her own dark agenda. And with a script full of English dialogue, Hiroshi Abe was seriously impressed by her performance.

“She picked it up so fast and delivered it with such precision,” he said at the premiere. “It’s amazing. I really hope we get to work together again.”
The ensemble cast also includes Nanao, Kenjiro Tsuda, and Taiwanese actor Austin Lin – rounding out a stylish, cross-cultural cast for this slick, futuristic crime caper.
With cyber heists, moral grey zones, and a whole lot of brainy twists, Candlestick promises to be a gripping ride for fans of tech thrillers. And for Alyssa Chia, it’s not just a role – it’s a bold new chapter in her already impressive career.
