Beijing got a bit hotter on Monday (May 19) — and it wasn’t just the weather. The cast of Legend of the Zang Hai, a much-hyped historical costume drama, showed up in full force at a large-scale promo event, and the energy? Electric.

With directors Zheng Xiaolong and Cao Yiwen at the helm, the drama promises serious heavyweight storytelling, and the star-studded line-up didn’t disappoint either. Xiao Zhan, Zhang Jingyi, Zhou Qi, Huang Jue, Zhang Duo, Sha Baoliang, Qiao Zhenyu, Zhao Ziqi — the names just kept coming, and so did the fans.

But let’s be honest — Xiao Zhan completely stole the spotlight the moment he walked in. Rocking a slicked-back ‘do and dressed like he hadn’t come to play, he was all charm and cheek. If anyone forgot why he’s one of China’s top stars, this was a sharp reminder.

Taking the mic to introduce his character, he slipped into “Zhan-style humour” mode straight away:

“Hello everyone, I am Zang Hai, an aide to the Hou Mansion. Recently, I’ve heard many rumours about me in the marketplace, and it seems many are doubting my identity. Well, since you’ve all guessed it already, I won’t hide it any longer. In fact, my real identity is actor Xiao Zhan.”

Cue: big laughs, loud cheers, and the kind of applause that only comes when someone nails a perfect joke.

Things got more serious (and a bit intense) when he dug deeper into his role. Xiao Zhan wasn’t shy about the darker sides of Zang Hai — a complex aide with venomous charm. He even gave fans a little theatre:

“Zang Hai is like a venomous snake. Don’t let me get the chance. Once I do, I’ll bite you to death — to the very last moment of your life.”

He followed that up by reenacting some of the character’s punchiest lines, including:

“My Lord, I don’t want to die yet,” and “I will end you one by one.”

We weren’t ready.

From what’s been teased so far, Legend of the Zang Hai dives headfirst into palace politics, secret identities, and a maze of power plays within noble families and the imperial court. Think betrayal, strategy, and simmering tension — all wrapped up in gorgeous historical visuals.

With a mega cast and directors who know how to deliver drama that hits, the series is shaping up to be one of this year’s most hotly anticipated period sagas.

And if the promo event is anything to go by, Xiao Zhan’s Zang Hai might just be the drama’s most unforgettable wildcard.
