Remember that stunning photo of Li Xian standing tall with a national flag in Yunnan’s Tiger Leaping Gorge? The one that made everyone on Xiaohongshu and Weibo go “Life goals”? Yeah, turns out that dreamy location has now been closed off – officially.

The site in question is a rocky outcrop in the middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge, fondly dubbed the “Zoning Out Rock” by netizens after Li Xian’s December 2024 visit sparked a viral wave of photo-hungry fans wanting to strike the same pose.

But those pilgrimage-style treks might have to wait – or stop altogether.

Tourists have recently noticed the entrance to the mid-gorge area (aka Zhong Hutiao) has been sealed off, with signs stating that entry is prohibited.

However, the higher hiking routes and the main Tiger Leaping Gorge area remain open for regular visits.

Back on 29 March, Shangri-La’s Culture and Tourism Bureau actually issued a formal warning.

The notice made it clear: parts of the middle gorge trail are undeveloped, unsafe, and lacking proper protection – with broken guardrails, worn-out signs, and unstable rocky paths.

The local authorities emphasised that no one – whether individuals, tour guides, or adventure junkies – should be entering those zones under the banner of “photography” or “exploration”.

By 23 April, staff from the Tiger Leaping Gorge Tourism Company confirmed it: “The entire Zhong Hutiao section is an undeveloped area and is now closed.”

One staff member even advised, “If you’re not coming to see Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, best not to come at all.”

So, while Li Xian might’ve unknowingly turned a secluded cliffside into an accidental hot spot, safety’s taken priority. Fans wanting that “life photo” moment will have to settle for viewing the scenery from a safer, sanctioned distance — or Photoshop their dreams for now.

For those still itching to explore, the Upper Gorge and other official trails are still open and spectacular. But as always: check before you trek.
