There’s a fresh detective drama creeping up on our screens – and it’s not your average whodunnit. Coroner’s Diary, led by Li Landi and Ao Ruipeng, dives deep into the world of medical mysteries, dark palace secrets, and just the right amount of creepy horror vibes to make your spine tingle.

Based on the web novel The Powerful and Favoured Medical Concubine by Bu Yue Qianzhuang, this series introduces us to Qin Wan – a sharp-witted coroner with a hidden past.

She’s not just poking at bodies and scribbling autopsy notes; she’s solving grisly, unsolved cases with a mix of top-tier forensics and killer intuition.

Oh, and did we mention her partner-in-crime-solving is a prince? That’s right, the ever-enigmatic Prince Yan Chi, played by Ao Ruipeng.

But before we get into the palace drama, let’s rewind a bit.

Qin Wan isn’t who she seems.

She’s actually Shen Wan, daughter of Shen Yi – a respected minister of the Dali Temple.

After her family is brutally wiped out due to their involvement in the controversial Jin Wang case, she runs away and assumes a new identity in Jingzhou.

Gone is the soft-spoken daughter; in her place stands a woman reborn – calm, calculating, and hungry for justice.

In Jingzhou, she reinvents herself as the ninth lady of the Qin Mansion. She treats the sick by day, solves murders by night.

Along the way, she crosses paths with Prince Yan Chi, whose own personal interest in the Jin Wang conspiracy leads them to team up. Naturally, sparks fly – both emotional and investigative.

Together, the duo delve into bizarre crimes that feel more horror flick than court case.

Think skeletons in secret tunnels, eerie green glows that shouldn't exist, and a mysterious woman in red who pops up way too often to be coincidence.

There’s even a haunting opera house scene that kicks off the show – dim lighting, ghostly vocals, and the ominous line: “Every time this opera plays… someone dies.”

It’s proper atmospheric stuff.

Visually, Coroner’s Diary leans heavily into traditional Chinese horror aesthetics.

Shadowy caverns, misty courtyards, flickering candles – all carefully curated to make the viewer feel like they’re constantly looking over their shoulder.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

There’s beauty in the details: elegant costume design, silky cinematography, and stellar performances that give the whole thing a high-end feel.

Li Landi, already known for her delicate looks and fierce performances, completely owns the role.

Her white robe scenes, especially, are stunning – elegance meets chilling intellect.

She balances Qin Wan’s gentle outer shell with an iron core that refuses to back down.

Ao Ruipeng, meanwhile, continues his rising star streak. Coming off his hit with White Moon and Brahma Star, he delivers a cool, brooding performance with enough emotional depth to keep us hooked.

His fight scenes? Absolute bangers.

And when he teams up with Li Landi, the chemistry is off the charts. Their banter, their teamwork, even their silences – it all works.

The supporting cast, which includes rising stars like Shen Yujie, Sun Xuening, and Yang Shize, bring added flair and depth to the story.

Everyone looks like they’ve walked straight out of an ancient painting, and their performances add a layer of richness to the already-intriguing plot.

Coroner’s Diary (朝雪录) has already wrapped post-production and passed the review board.

That means it’s officially greenlit and entering its pre-broadcast phase. All signs point to a premiere just around the corner – possibly in the upcoming summer season.

With its compelling mix of crime thriller, historical drama, and supernatural horror, this show is shaping up to be a real dark horse in the drama circuit. The buzz is already building, and fans of gothic thrillers and period mysteries should definitely keep an eye on this one.
