At the 2025 Capital Audiovisual Program Spring Fair in Beijing, Perfect World Pictures dropped a major announcement – Ashes of Love is getting a brand-new adaptation, this time in the form of a short drama.

During the drama development forum, Zeng Yingxue, head of Perfect World's film and television division, took the stage and spoke about bridging the gap between long and short-form storytelling.

According to her, the company is working hard on building IP linkages across different formats to squeeze even more magic (and value) out of their hit shows.

And one of the most exciting projects in the pipeline? None other than Ashes of Love

The original 2018 drama, starring Yang Zi, Deng Lun, and Luo Yunxi, became a massive hit back in the day, charming audiences with its sweeping love story and stunning visuals.

Ashes of Love Gets a Short Drama Makeover

According to Sohu, the series has racked up a jaw-dropping 20 billion views and runs for a whopping 2,600 minutes in total. Talk about epic!

“With numbers like that, it's only natural we want to revisit this beloved story in a fresh, snappier format,” said Zeng.

As for the casting of the short drama version? Well, that's still up in the air.

Yang Zi and Luo Yunxi are both still riding high at the top of the industry, but Deng Lun’s future remains uncertain after his tax scandal saw him blacklisted.

Whether he’ll be invited back — or if the new project will feature a completely fresh cast — is anyone’s guess at this point.

Either way, fans are already buzzing with excitement (and a little bit of nervousness) about what a short drama spin on Ashes of Love might look like. Fingers crossed we get more updates soon
