And now, after relentless backlash, the director has finally spoken up.
Fans of the novel already had issues with how Wen Yifan, played by Zhang Ruonan, was portrayed.
In the book, she was strong and independent.
In the drama? She’s constantly harassed and seems helpless.
The worst moment came in episode nine when a random homeless man exposed himself to her on the street—something that wasn’t in the novel at all.
This was the final straw for fans.
Complaints flooded social media, with many accusing the scriptwriters of ruining Wen Yifan’s character.
Even Zhang Ruonan’s own fans refused to defend the production team, openly criticising the changes.
With pressure mounting, the director addressed the controversy in a fan group chat.
His response? “We have made corrections.”

They want to know why the showrunners even added these scenes in the first place.
While Wen Yifan’s character has taken a hit, the male lead, Sang Yan, has been softened and made more likable.

Fans are questioning why Wen Yifan was rewritten to be weaker while Sang Yan got a more sympathetic portrayal.
