Journalism War: Ito Shiori Files Defamation Case Against Mochizuki

Ito Shiori Files Defamation Case Against Mochizuki

Right, so here's the drama: Shiori Ito, the well-known journalist and activist, has officially sued Tokyo Shimbun writer Isoko Mochizuki for defamation.

Why?

Because Mochizuki’s article supposedly twisted the facts about a film Ito worked on.

The case, filed on the 10th at Tokyo District Court, demands ¥3.3 million in damages.

Heavy stuff.

This all goes back to a film called Black Box Diaries, where Ito documented her own experiences with sexual violence.

Mochizuki wrote a piece in January saying the film used footage from a private event without permission, claiming a participant had shared a story similar to Ito's.

Naturally, this didn’t sit well.

Ito Shiori’s team clapped back, saying permission was given. But the damage was done.

The article made it look like Ito was out here selfishly using other survivors’ stories without care, dragging her reputation through the mud.

The paper later fixed the article in February, admitting to “misleading expressions” and apologised.

But Mochizuki? She’s doubling down, saying, “The article’s fine, but I adjusted it to appease Ito’s side.”

She also reckons this lawsuit is all about silencing her voice.

So, whose side are you on? One thing’s clear – this courtroom clash is set to make headlines for a while.
