Fan Bingbing, the once-untouchable queen of Chinese cinema, is making her way back into the limelight.
But this time, she’s not just acting—she’s talking.
At the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, Fan Bingbing was put on the spot about her infamous 2018 tax evasion scandal.
You know, the one that got her blacklisted in China and wiped her off screens for years.
Her reaction?
A little flustered, but she didn’t dodge the question.
She admitted that the first few months after the scandal were rough.
“I mostly stayed at home,” she said, describing a period of deep reflection.

It wasn’t just about laying low; she was figuring out how to move forward.
“It was a difficult time, but I learned a lot.”
Back then, wild rumours swirled.
Some said she was arrested. Others claimed she had fled China.
The reality?
She was hit with a staggering CN¥883 million (around USD 121 million) in fines and had to issue a public apology.
It was a career-shattering moment.
Fast forward to now, and Fan Bingbing is slowly rebuilding her place in the industry.

She eased back in with small roles before making a proper comeback in the 2023 Hong Kong film Green Night.
Now, she’s even got a Malaysian film, Mother Bhumi, on the way.
Looking back, Fan Bingbing said the scandal changed how she approaches acting.
“I have always wanted to find a story and a script that fit my mood and feelings at that time.”
In other words, she’s more selective now.
It must’ve been awkward to be asked about something she probably wants to forget, but credit to her—she faced it head-on. And with a few upcoming projects in the bag, it looks like Fan Bingbing’s back for good.
