China Tightens Rules for Short-Form Dramas

China’s NRTA has rolled out fresh regulations to control the booming short-form drama industry.

These micro-dramas, with episodes lasting just a few minutes, have skyrocketed in popularity, prompting the government to step in.

Under the new rules, any drama lacking a proper permit or filing number won’t be allowed online.

Platforms hosting these shows now have stricter responsibilities, especially for projects with over 1 million yuan in investment or those promoted on homepages.

These will need higher-level approval, similar to traditional dramas.

Themes touching on politics, military affairs, diplomacy, and religion will face tougher content reviews.

Unapproved shows won’t get any online promotion.

Short-form dramas, known for their fast-paced and addictive storylines, have been a hit with audiences.

But with these tighter regulations, the creative direction of the industry could change drastically.

How this will affect its growth is still unclear.
