Are Corinna and Michael Schumacher Still Together? Their Marriage and Life Today.

Corinna and Michael Schumacher are still married, with their relationship shaped by more than three decades together, two children and a life that changed dramatically after Michael’s 2013 skiing accident. While Michael’s Formula 1 career made him one of the most recognisable figures in sport, Corinna has largely kept their marriage and family life away from public view, particularly since the accident.

The pair first crossed paths at a karting track, long before Michael became a seven-time Formula 1 world champion. Corinna noticed him almost immediately, although the relationship did not receive an enthusiastic welcome from everyone around her.

Her mother reportedly disapproved at first, but Michael and Corinna began dating in 1992. From there, she became a familiar presence around his racing career, travelling with him as his profile grew.

Their relationship was tested early by the intense pressures surrounding Formula 1. The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola was particularly difficult for Corinna after the accidents at the circuit. She has recalled feeling deeply anxious during that period and even publicly called for racing at the venue to stop.

Michael was also affected by the death of Ayrton Senna, one of the defining figures of his racing generation. Corinna remembered the couple spending time together on a swing, talking about what was happening around them. Even then, however, she felt Michael sometimes kept his worries to himself because he was trying to shield her from them. Romance, apparently, came with a side order of emotional compartmentalisation.

The 1994 season brought another strain when Michael faced allegations of cheating. Corinna has described how upsetting the situation was, particularly after watching the enormous amount of work he had put into his championship campaign. Yet she also remained convinced that he could succeed. As the title battle approached its conclusion, she said she could see the belief in his eyes.

Michael and Corinna married on August 1, 1995, in a civil ceremony in Kerpen, Germany, Michael’s hometown. Their wedding attracted substantial media attention, reportedly creating such pressure around the event that there were concerns about whether it could go ahead as planned. Despite the circus outside, the couple went through with it.

Family life followed. Their daughter, Gina-Maria, was born in 1997, while their son, Mick, arrived in 1999. Michael occasionally offered small glimpses into his private life, including comments in 2005 about his continuing love for Corinna. When he eventually stepped away from Formula 1 racing in 2012, he intended to devote more time to his family.

That plan changed less than a year later. On December 29, 2013, Michael suffered a serious skiing accident in Méribel, France, leaving the family facing a completely different future. Since then, Corinna has played a central role in organising his care while maintaining an unusually strict boundary between their private life and the public interest surrounding him.

Michael has continued to live at the family home in Gland, Switzerland, where he receives care from nurses and therapists. Corinna has overseen that arrangement while the family has avoided providing regular public updates about his condition. For one of the world's most famous sporting families, the decision has been remarkably consistent: what happens inside their home stays inside their home.

That privacy became even more important in 2024, when a former security employee and others were involved in an attempted extortion scheme concerning private material linked to Michael. Prosecutors said the group sought €15 million in exchange for not releasing photographs, videos and medical information. The episode underlined just how fiercely the family has guarded information about Michael since the accident.

Corinna has explained that protecting Michael is now part of her responsibility. Her comments suggest a reversal of the dynamic that existed during much of their earlier marriage: Michael once tried to protect her and their family from the pressures surrounding his career, while Corinna now sees herself as the person responsible for protecting him and the family’s private world.

The marriage, then, is not simply a story about a famous Formula 1 couple who stayed together. It is a relationship that has gone through the very public highs of championship racing and the intensely private reality that followed Michael’s accident. There has been no public indication that Corinna and Michael have separated, and everything she has said and done since 2013 points to her continuing role as his wife and principal guardian of their family’s privacy.

There is something almost strikingly old-fashioned about the Schumachers’ approach to marriage: the world wants an update, and Corinna essentially keeps the door shut. That may frustrate people accustomed to constant celebrity updates, but it also makes her position remarkably clear. She is not trying to turn Michael’s private life into another chapter of his public career.

After years spent watching the cameras follow them everywhere, choosing silence seems less mysterious than sensible. Their relationship has survived fame, championship pressure, family changes and an enormous personal upheaval without becoming a public performance. Are you surprised that Corinna and Michael have remained together through everything, or do you think their decision to keep their marriage private is exactly the right approach?
