| Why Is Under One Person 2024 So Hard to Watch Outside China? |
Finding Under One Person (一人之下) online has become almost as challenging as surviving the supernatural world of the Yi Ren itself. Since arriving in Chinese cinemas, the fantasy action adaptation has attracted steady interest from fans of the original manhua, but viewers outside China are still hitting the same frustrating dead end. Plenty of searches, plenty of excitement, yet no widely available international streaming home has officially opened its doors for the film.
Directed by Wuershan, the filmmaker behind the ambitious fantasy epic Creation of the Gods, Under One Person (2024) arrived with considerable expectations. Also known internationally as The Traveller and sometimes simply Under One Person, the live-action feature adapts Mi Er's beloved supernatural manhua into a large-scale cinematic adventure packed with martial arts, mythology and urban fantasy. Unfortunately for overseas audiences, finding the film legally remains far easier said than done.
At present, the answer to the biggest question is straightforward. Under One Person (2024) has not been released on major international streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Viki.
While the film completed its theatrical release in China after premiering on 26 July 2024 and later became available through domestic digital platforms, there has still been no official announcement confirming a worldwide streaming release.
That means international fans searching every streaming service imaginable may have to keep refreshing their watchlists for a little longer. Sometimes it feels as though the mysterious powers in the film are easier to locate than the film itself. As things stand, there is currently no confirmed legal streaming option for audiences outside China.
Part of the confusion comes from the number of titles associated with the project. Depending on where people search, the same movie may appear as Yi Ren Zhi Xia, Under One Person, The Traveller, or even I Am Nobody on certain international databases. Despite the different names, they all refer to Wuershan's 2024 theatrical adaptation rather than the earlier television series.
The story follows Zhang Chulan, played by Hu Xianxu, an ordinary university student whose quiet life changes forever after discovering the hidden society of the Yi Ren, individuals possessing extraordinary abilities that exist alongside the normal world.
As secrets emerge and powerful factions begin moving behind the scenes, Zhang is drawn into conflicts rooted in ancient traditions, Daoist philosophy and supernatural martial arts. Alongside him stands Feng Baobao, portrayed by Vanda Margraf, whose mysterious past has fascinated fans of the original source material for years.
The supporting cast also brings together several familiar Chinese stars including Feng Shaofeng, Qiao Zhenyu and Song Ningfeng, helping build an impressive ensemble around the fantasy adventure. Combined with Wuershan's reputation for large-scale visual storytelling, expectations before release were understandably high.
However, the film's commercial journey proved more complicated than many expected. Despite considerable anticipation, Under One Person (2024) earned approximately 116–118 million yuan at the Chinese box office, falling well below expectations for a fantasy blockbuster based on such a popular property. That performance inevitably raised questions about its long-term international prospects.
Audience reactions have also been mixed. Some viewers praised the ambitious visual effects, energetic action scenes and the attempt to bring the manhua's supernatural world to life on the big screen.
Others felt the adaptation tried to squeeze far too much story into a single film, leaving important characters and world-building without enough room to breathe.
Fans familiar with the original material also debated the cyberpunk-inspired visual direction, arguing that it shifted away from the grounded urban fantasy atmosphere and traditional Chinese cultural influences that helped define the source material.
Those varied reactions have continued online. Supporters argue that Wuershan deserves credit for taking creative risks instead of delivering a straightforward adaptation. Critics, meanwhile, believe the film sacrificed emotional depth in favour of spectacle.
As often happens with passionate fan communities, everyone seems convinced they have discovered the definitive opinion, which is both entertaining and entirely predictable.
While the film itself remains difficult to watch internationally, the wider Under One Person universe is much easier to explore. The most popular live-action adaptation so far is I Am Nobody (2023), produced by Youku.
Starring Peng Yuchang as Zhang Chulan, Wang Yinglu as Feng Baobao, and Hou Minghao as Wang Ye, the series earned far stronger audience approval and introduced many newcomers to the franchise. Its success even paved the way for another season, expanding the story beyond the original episodes.
Another option is Tencent Video's short drama Feng Baobao & Zhang Chulan, starring Sun Anke and Chen Bohao. Presented in a shorter episode format, the series focuses more closely on the relationship between its two central characters while offering another perspective on the supernatural universe created by Mi Er.
For now, Under One Person (2024) remains one of those films that international fans know exists but cannot easily watch through official global platforms.
Unless distributors announce a wider release in the future, viewers outside China will have to remain patient while exploring the better-known television adaptations that have already found a broader audience.
