One of the biggest talking points surrounding Saccharine isn't just its unsettling body horror or haunting psychological story. Viewers have also become fascinated by the locations that helped create the film's eerie atmosphere. From realistic university laboratories to quiet suburban streets and purpose-built studio sets, every backdrop plays an important role in making Hana's terrifying journey feel disturbingly believable. While several filming sites have now been confirmed, not every location used during production has ever been publicly identified. Like many major productions, certain filming spots were intentionally kept under wraps to avoid enthusiastic fans accidentally interrupting filming or crowding the cast and crew.

Released in 2026, Saccharine follows medical student Hana, played by Midori Francis, whose desperate attempt to create an underground weight-loss drug from human ashes unleashes a terrifying supernatural force.

Directed by Natalie Erika James, the psychological horror blends body horror with emotional storytelling, using Melbourne's modern cityscape and carefully designed interiors to build a world that feels both familiar and increasingly unsettling.

Fans have responded positively to the film's visual style. Many praised how ordinary places gradually become deeply uncomfortable as Hana's mental state begins to unravel.

Others admitted they now look suspiciously at kitchen spoons after discovering that's where the ghost prefers making surprise appearances. Horror films really do have a remarkable talent for making household objects feel unnecessarily dramatic.

Docklands Studios Melbourne

The heart of Saccharine's production was Docklands Studios Melbourne, one of Australia's largest film production facilities. Rather than relying entirely on existing buildings, the filmmakers constructed many of the movie's most important locations inside controlled soundstages.

This gave the production team complete freedom to choreograph complex visual effects, prosthetic work and intricate camera movements without worrying about unpredictable weather or public interruptions.

Hana's apartment, where much of the supernatural horror unfolds, was entirely built inside the studio. Every room was carefully designed to maximise reflective surfaces, allowing Bertha's ghostly appearances to emerge from spoons, kitchen appliances and polished objects. It's probably one of the few apartments where even making a cup of tea feels like a risky life decision.

The production also built interconnected hallways and the memorable garbage chute sequence inside the soundstage. These specially designed sets allowed long tracking shots that follow Hana during her unsettling nighttime episodes, creating a constant feeling that something unseen is following just behind her.

Another purpose-built environment recreated the underground distribution point for The Grey, the illegal weight-loss drug central to the story. The gritty basement set helped establish the dangerous black-market world hidden beneath Hana's increasingly desperate decisions.

The studio also hosted extensive green-screen and blue-screen stages where practical prosthetics and digital visual effects could be combined. Lead actress Midori Francis reportedly spent several hours each day wearing detailed prosthetic makeup before visual effects artists enhanced the disturbing body transformations in post-production.

La Trobe University, Melbourne

Away from the soundstages, La Trobe University became one of the film's most recognisable real-world locations. The campus provided the backdrop for Hana's everyday life as a medical student, giving the story an authentic academic atmosphere rather than relying on generic fictional classrooms.

Perhaps even more significant were the university's genuine anatomy laboratories, which were used for the scenes involving the cadaver known as "Big Bertha".

The realistic medical facilities helped ground the film in reality before the supernatural elements gradually took over. It turns out real anatomy labs are already unsettling enough without adding angry spirits into the equation.

Visitors can explore much of the university campus, although naturally many specialised teaching areas remain restricted to students and authorised personnel. Even so, fans may recognise several exterior locations that appear throughout Hana's daily routine.

Brunswick, Melbourne

The vibrant suburb of Brunswick supplied much of Hana's ordinary neighbourhood environment. Known for its mix of residential streets, independent cafés and creative atmosphere, Brunswick offered a believable urban setting that contrasts nicely with the increasingly bizarre events happening inside Hana's life.

The suburb appears throughout numerous outdoor scenes as Hana walks between locations, reflecting the normal routine she desperately tries to maintain despite everything falling apart around her.

The irony is almost impressive. One minute she's walking through peaceful Melbourne streets, the next she's trying to survive supernatural consequences of homemade pharmaceuticals. We've all had stressful weeks, but Hana definitely wins that competition.

Today, Brunswick remains one of Melbourne's most popular neighbourhoods for visitors, with plenty of restaurants, cafés and local shops making it an enjoyable stop beyond its film connections.

Beaumaris, Victoria

For a different visual tone, the production travelled south to Beaumaris, a coastal suburb known for its quieter residential streets and relaxed seaside atmosphere. The area provides a noticeable contrast to Brunswick's denser urban environment, helping establish moments of temporary calm before the horror inevitably returns.

The open streets and suburban surroundings reinforce Hana's isolation, proving that terrifying events don't always require abandoned castles or haunted forests. Sometimes peaceful neighbourhoods are unsettling enough when someone's being followed by a hungry ghost.

Beaumaris is also easily accessible for visitors and offers scenic coastal walks, beaches and parks, making it one of the more enjoyable filming locations to explore. Thankfully, the local scenery is considerably less frightening in real life.

Melbourne, Victoria

Although specific filming locations were spread across several suburbs, Melbourne itself functions almost like another character in Saccharine

Its combination of modern architecture, educational institutions, residential communities and world-class production facilities allowed the filmmakers to move seamlessly between realistic drama and increasingly surreal horror.

Production took place during December 2024, with the Victorian capital providing everything from practical filming locations to advanced studio infrastructure. The decision to keep some smaller filming sites undisclosed was a deliberate one, helping the cast and crew work without attracting large crowds during production.

It's slightly disappointing for location hunters, but considerably better than having dramatic horror scenes interrupted by someone asking for selfies halfway through filming.

Several of the publicly confirmed locations featured in Saccharine remain open to visitors today, making them worthwhile stops for film fans planning a trip around Melbourne.

While you won't find haunted reflections or mysterious underground weight-loss experiments waiting around the corner, you will discover the places that helped bring one of 2026's most talked-about psychological horror films to life.

As more behind-the-scenes information becomes available, additional filming locations may eventually be confirmed. Until then, these remain the major verified sites used throughout production.
