Fans of Inspector Ellis are already asking the big question following the end of the second season: will DCI Ellis and DS Harper be back for another round of impossible investigations? While Channel 5 has yet to confirm a third season, there is no shortage of optimism surrounding the crime drama. The latest comments from star Andrew Gower have only fuelled hopes that the partnership at the heart of the series is far from over, leaving viewers wondering whether another batch of complex mysteries is simply waiting for the green light.

At the moment, Inspector Ellis Season 3 has not been officially commissioned, meaning there is still no confirmed release date. Even so, the show's release pattern offers a useful clue. The first season premiered in late 2024 before the second arrived in spring 2026, leaving a gap of roughly eighteen months.

If production follows a similar schedule, a third season could realistically arrive sometime in late 2027. That remains speculation for now, but fans have learned that patience is almost a required skill when it comes to British detective dramas. They solve murders more quickly than television executives solve renewal decisions.

One encouraging sign comes directly from Andrew Gower, who has made it abundantly clear that he would happily return as DS Harper

Speaking about the possibility of another season, the actor described his answer as an "easy yes", explaining that he would gladly continue working alongside Sharon D Clarke while exploring the evolving relationship between Harper and Ellis. His enthusiasm suggests there is plenty more story left to tell, even if the official announcement has yet to arrive.

Gower also hinted that one of the most interesting directions for another season would not necessarily involve bigger crimes but deeper character development. Harper has effectively left his old career behind to follow Ellis into unfamiliar territory, placing enormous trust in his mentor.

That commitment creates an emotional imbalance that has quietly become one of the show's strongest storylines. Harper clearly needs Ellis, but the more intriguing question is whether Ellis needs Harper just as much.

It is exactly the sort of relationship that can quietly simmer beneath every investigation without stealing attention from the weekly mysteries. If Inspector Ellis returns, viewers would almost certainly expect Sharon D Clarke to reprise her role as the sharp and composed DCI Ellis, with Andrew Gower returning as the increasingly confident DS Harper

Their chemistry has become one of the defining strengths of the series, balancing quiet humour with genuine mutual respect.

Fans would also hope to see Charlotte McCurry return as DC Kate Trent, alongside Allison Harding as ACC Alison Leighton, helping maintain the investigative team audiences have grown attached to.

As with previous seasons, the supporting cast would likely change from episode to episode. One of the strengths of Inspector Ellis is its rotating collection of guest characters, with each investigation introducing a fresh community filled with suspects, secrets and enough suspicious behaviour to make even the local baker look guilty.

Sometimes everyone seems innocent, which in detective dramas usually means absolutely nobody is. Story-wise, Inspector Ellis Season 3 could comfortably continue the formula that has worked so well while gradually expanding the partnership between Ellis and Harper.

Rather than simply solving another collection of murders, the next chapter could explore how both detectives begin influencing each other's decision-making.

Harper is steadily becoming more experienced, while Ellis may finally find herself relying on him in ways she never expected. That shift could create subtle tension without abandoning the calm investigative style that separates the series from louder crime dramas.

Another likely direction would see Ellis tackling even more isolated communities where long-held rivalries, buried family histories and carefully hidden motives have remained untouched for years.

Inspector Ellis Season 2 demonstrated that the strongest mysteries often emerge from places where everyone claims to know one another. As viewers have discovered, that usually means somebody has spent decades hiding the truth behind an impressively polite smile.

The second season also proved that Inspector Ellis does not need flashy technology or endless action sequences to build suspense. Instead, it focuses on patient detective work, careful observation and conversations where every word matters.

That slower, more deliberate storytelling has become one of its biggest strengths, allowing the audience to piece together clues alongside Ellis rather than simply waiting for dramatic last-minute twists. It is refreshingly old-fashioned without ever feeling outdated.

Across fan discussions, reactions have been largely positive, although opinions naturally differ on where the story should head next. Many viewers have praised the growing partnership between Ellis and Harper, describing it as one of the most believable detective pairings on television.

Others are hoping Inspector Ellis Season 3 gives Harper an even larger role, allowing him to step further out of Ellis's shadow while continuing to learn from her experience. Some fans would also welcome slightly longer seasons, arguing that just as they settle into the latest investigation, the credits appear and disappear almost as quickly as the culprit's alibi.

Until Channel 5 makes an official announcement, Inspector Ellis Season 3 remains firmly in the category of hopeful expectation rather than confirmed television. However, with strong audience support, positive reviews and cast members openly expressing their desire to continue, the prospects look encouraging.

If another season does happen, viewers can probably expect more intricate mysteries, stronger character development and another reminder that the quiet detective standing in the corner usually notices absolutely everything.

What do you want to see in Inspector Ellis Season 3? Should Ellis and Harper remain an inseparable team, or is it time for the series to shake up their partnership?
