Zhou Ye arrived at the 79th Cannes Film Festival looking every bit the luxury fashion ambassador global brands dream about. Unfortunately for the actress, Chinese social media had other plans. While international fashion pages praised her ethereal grey-lilac couture gown and elegant presence, parts of her own fandom immediately turned the conversation into a full-scale discussion about her styling team, makeup choices and even her fitness routine.

Because apparently attending Cannes now also requires surviving unsolicited online personal training advice. The ‘Legend of the Female General’ actress made her second Cannes red carpet appearance as a L’Oréal Paris ambassador, wearing a soft grey-purple haute couture dress from Vietnamese designer brand Phan Huy’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection

The gown featured a structured corset-style bodice with layered tulle detailing, balancing icy elegance with dramatic fantasy energy. Paired with Tasaki jewellery, the styling leaned heavily into the “cold beauty” image that has helped define Zhou Ye’s public persona over the past few years.

International fashion observers largely responded positively. Several entertainment outlets described the look as a refined upgrade from her previous Cannes appearance, praising the balance between softness and sharpness in her styling.

Photos from the red carpet quickly circulated across Weibo, Xiaohongshu and global fan pages, especially as Zhou Ye’s popularity continues climbing thanks to Tencent historical dramas including ‘Legend of the Female General’ and romance series ‘Dream of Golden Years’.

But once the unedited event photos started spreading online, the mood inside parts of the fandom changed rapidly. Comments flooded discussion threads criticising her makeup, with many specifically targeting longtime makeup artist Wang Yafei. Some fans argued the heavy eye makeup made Zhou Ye appear tired during close-up shots, while others claimed the styling failed to flatter her features under harsh Cannes flash photography.

One viral comment bluntly read, “Maybe try a different makeup artist for once. The makeup looks dull on the red carpet and makes her eyes look swollen.” Another user directly told the actress’s styling team to “stay away” from the current makeup direction altogether, claiming Zhou Ye’s natural visuals were “doing all the work already”.

Of course, this being celebrity fandom culture in 2026, the conversation escalated almost immediately from makeup criticism into full unsolicited body analysis. Several comments urged Zhou Ye to work out more regularly, with some users claiming the actress looked less toned than during previous drama promotions.

Others criticised what they described as “soft arm lines” and a visible double chin in certain candid photos. One particularly dramatic comment suggested she should “cut down on sugar and hotpot”, as though enjoying dinner had suddenly become a criminal offence against couture fashion.

Another viral remark sarcastically questioned what Zhou Ye was supposedly doing during breaks between filming projects, writing, “Not filming right now and still not managing image properly?”

Meanwhile, other users debated whether the actress relied too heavily on dieting instead of exercise to maintain her appearance, with some bizarrely analysing old magazine interviews discussing fitness and abdominal training. Somewhere deep in Cannes, a French photographer probably took one photo and accidentally triggered a nationwide debate about Pilates.

Not all reactions were negative. A large number of fans defended Zhou Ye aggressively, arguing that the criticism had crossed from fashion discussion into unnecessary personal attacks. Supporters pointed out that Cannes lighting and unedited photography are notoriously unforgiving, even for top Hollywood celebrities. Others argued that Zhou Ye still looked strikingly elegant and carried herself confidently despite the online noise surrounding the event.

Several supporters also praised the actress for evolving stylistically compared to previous international appearances. Many felt her Cannes 2026 look reflected a more mature image that aligned with her transition into heavier leading roles.

One highly shared comment described her as looking “like a princess escaping from an ancient castle”, which honestly sounds exactly like the kind of role Chinese historical drama producers would greenlight by tomorrow morning. Some users even joked that celebrities now need “a makeup team, gym coach, nutritionist and crisis manager” just to survive one red carpet event without trending for the wrong reasons.

Meanwhile, interest surrounding Zhou Ye herself continues growing regardless of the controversy. Her upcoming drama ‘Legend of the Female General’, where she plays fierce military heroine He Yan, remains one of the most anticipated Chinese historical productions currently in discussion online. Fans are especially curious whether the drama’s action-heavy role will shift public perception again once promotional materials and fight scenes start dropping officially.
