Nobody at the Zhengzhou mall seemed prepared for what happened when Zhang Chi was announced as the guest for a cosmetic brand pop-up event. Organisers reportedly filed the event expecting around 300 attendees. Instead, the entire shopping centre looked less like a beauty campaign and more like a concert arena with people packed across multiple floors before lunchtime had even arrived. By midday, security concerns forced the event to be cancelled altogether, leaving thousands of fans stunned, frustrated, and honestly a bit speechless at how badly the turnout had been underestimated.

The situation quickly became one of the hottest entertainment talking points online this week, with many netizens joking that the organisers clearly still hadn’t realised how massive China’s short drama industry has become. Once treated as “small-screen quick entertainment”, vertical dramas are now creating celebrities with fanbases powerful enough to overwhelm shopping malls. And right at the centre of that conversation is Zhang Chi, the 24-year-old actor now widely labelled one of the biggest breakout stars in the short drama world.

According to reports from Chinese media, the event was scheduled to take place at a shopping mall in Zhengzhou alongside a cosmetic brand campaign. But fans had already started gathering a day earlier.

By the morning of the event, crowds reportedly stretched across several floors inside the mall, with long queues forming both inside and outside the venue area. Videos circulating online showed packed walkways, escalators filled with people holding phones overhead, and security struggling to maintain movement through the building.

Some online users sarcastically remarked that the organisers “booked security for a campus club event but invited a top-tier idol instead”.

Others joked that whoever estimated the crowd size deserved “a new calculator”. Behind the humour, though, many people pointed out the situation could easily have become dangerous if the crowd continued growing.

The actor’s popularity has exploded over the past year thanks to hit short dramas including Breaking the Cage and Mutual Desire, with viewers especially praising his emotional acting style and strong screen presence.

He has also appeared in bigger mainstream productions including The Blood of Youth and Lost You Forever, helping him bridge the gap between short-form drama audiences and traditional television viewers.

Witnesses said the mall became almost impossible to navigate shortly after opening at 9:30am. Fans who entered early were reportedly pushed toward the back sections of the event space, while the front area was heavily blocked by security staff.

Many others never managed to enter properly at all, remaining trapped in crowded corridors or standing outside hoping to catch even a brief glimpse of the actor.

Eventually, local authorities and security teams reportedly concluded that the risks were becoming too serious. Concerns over overcrowding and possible accidents led organisers to abruptly cancel the appearance before the event officially began. The announcement immediately triggered disappointment among fans who had spent hours waiting at the venue.

What made the cancellation sting even more for supporters was learning how much effort Zhang Chi himself had made just to attend. Reports claimed the actor had continued filming until around 3am before taking an early morning flight to Zhengzhou.

After finding out the event had been cancelled, he reportedly returned straight back to set to continue working. That detail alone sparked another wave of discussion online, with many fans calling him hardworking and professional despite the chaos surrounding the schedule.

Several fans also shared stories about travelling from other cities the day before the event. Some reportedly spent significant money on transport and hotels just for the chance to see the actor in person.

Instead, many ended up taking photos of overcrowded escalators before heading home disappointed. One viral comment bluntly read: “At this point I saw more security guards than Zhang Chi.”

Zhang Chi Fans Flooded the Mall So Badly Organisers Had No Choice but to Cancel

Following the incident, Zhang Chi Studio released an apology statement soon after the cancellation was confirmed.

The team stated that public safety had to remain the top priority and that they fully cooperated with decisions made by local authorities. The statement also apologised directly to fans for the sudden cancellation and inconvenience caused by the situation.

The studio added that discussions regarding compensation plans were currently underway based on the circumstances surrounding the event.

Although details have not yet been fully revealed, the team said they hoped to make up for the disappointment and properly thank supporters for their continued enthusiasm.

Zhang Chi’s Popularity Became Too Big for the Venue as Mall Event Was Shut Down

Zhang Chi fans defended the cancellation, arguing that safety mattered more than forcing the event to continue. Others criticised organisers for seriously underestimating the actor’s current influence, especially considering how quickly short drama stars are dominating online entertainment culture in China. Some netizens even said the situation proves the industry still isn’t being taken seriously enough by major brands despite its enormous audience reach.
