Mayday frontman Ashin suddenly found himself at the centre of marriage rumours this week after alleged insurance documents spread across Chinese-language social media during the band’s final concert at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium. The timing could not have been more dramatic if someone scripted it for a streaming drama. One minute fans were singing emotional 五月天 classics with phone flashlights in the air, and the next the internet was apparently turning into a full-time investigation unit.
The rumours exploded after online users shared what they claimed was a high-value life insurance policy allegedly linked to the 50-year-old singer, whose real name is Chen Hsin-hung.
According to the circulating screenshots, the policy reportedly listed longtime assistant Hong Wan-qi, often nicknamed “cousin” by fans and media, as the sole beneficiary. What pushed the story into full chaos territory, however, was the alleged relationship label beside her name: “wife”.
That single word was enough to send Threads, Weibo and entertainment forums into meltdown within hours. Fans immediately began zooming into screenshots like forensic analysts who had accidentally swapped careers from pop music enthusiasts to legal document specialists overnight.

Some users even tracked the alleged policy timeline, claiming the insurance was purchased in May 2024 during a break in Mayday’s Hong Kong concert schedule.
The alleged policy reportedly involved a sum of US$2 million, with online rumours further claiming the insurance connection came through Jay Chou, one of Ashin’s longtime celebrity friends.
None of these claims have been independently verified, but the sheer detail circulating online — including partially exposed personal information — fuelled even more speculation.
Many fans were less interested in the marriage rumour itself and more horrified that private data appeared to be floating around social media so casually. The internet really has become a place where absolutely nobody can quietly buy paperwork anymore.
For longtime followers of Ashin, the sudden attention on his private life felt both surprising and strangely inevitable. Among the members of Mayday, he has long carried the image of the group’s mysterious “golden bachelor”, rarely discussing romance publicly despite more than two decades in the spotlight.

In fact, the only relationship he ever openly acknowledged was with a university girlfriend reportedly nicknamed “Egg Girl”, whom he dated for 14 years before fame fully swallowed normal life whole.
Rumours involving assistant Hong Wan-qi have followed him for years. Back in 2014 and 2015, Taiwanese media outlets published photos allegedly showing the pair shopping together, visiting night markets, travelling to Tokyo and spending time in public looking noticeably close.
At one point, tabloid reports even claimed they had already been living together for years, though management strongly denied the allegations at the time.
Despite repeated denials, Hong Wan-qi has remained a constant presence beside Ashin for over a decade, which naturally kept gossip communities permanently interested. In celebrity culture, apparently standing next to the same person for too many years automatically turns the internet into a wedding planning committee.
As speculation intensified this week, Bin Music, the official management company behind Mayday, finally responded with a brief but direct statement.
The agency rejected the claims entirely, stating that the rumours were false and thanking the public for their concern. The company did not elaborate further, but the response was enough to calm some fans who felt the online discussion had already spiralled too far into invasion-of-privacy territory.

Some fans defended Ashin immediately, arguing that celebrities deserve private lives without every friendship turning into marriage gossip. Others joked that if the rumours ever turned out to be true, the biggest plot twist would not be the marriage itself but Ashin successfully hiding anything from the entertainment press for this long.
Meanwhile, another corner of the internet reacted with complete indifference, basically saying: “He’s 50. Why are people acting shocked that he might have a personal life?”
That particular response gained traction quickly, especially among older fans who have watched Mayday evolve from rock band outsiders into one of Mandopop’s biggest institutions.
For now, Ashin himself has remained silent, continuing concert activities while the internet continues doing what it does best — analysing blurry screenshots with the confidence of trained investigators.
