The final episode of The Inn 2026 (亲爱的·客栈2026) somehow turned a cosy variety show farewell into one of the messiest entertainment discussions currently dominating Chinese social media. What was apparently meant to be a playful closing segment quickly spiralled into backlash after Dylan Wang Hedi publicly admitted he felt genuinely uncomfortable during the programme’s awards section, while Shen Yue later stepped forward with a lengthy apology trying to explain how the whole situation snowballed this badly in the first place.
The controversy exploded after viewers noticed that while other cast members received warm and flattering awards during the finale, Dylan Wang was handed a joke title translated roughly as “Best You’re Just Wang Hedi Award”. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the wording did not land as lightly as producers probably expected.
Instead, many viewers interpreted it as mocking him publicly, especially because the phrase carried an awkward Mandarin wordplay implying someone being “at the bottom” or reduced to “just that person”. Safe to say, the internet immediately clocked the atmosphere shift.

Things became even more awkward during the same segment when a private group chat was casually mentioned on-screen, only for Dylan Wang to realise he was apparently not part of it. His visible confusion instantly became viral meme material online.
In a programme built around teamwork and friendship, viewers quickly started questioning whether the actor had quietly been excluded behind the scenes all along. One tiny group chat mention suddenly became a full-scale internet detective project within hours.

After the backlash intensified throughout the day, Dylan Wang finally addressed the issue himself through social media.
The actor admitted that he initially thought he might simply be “too sensitive”, but after seeing endless online discussions analysing the moment frame-by-frame, he realised his discomfort was actually real.

His post immediately drew attention because Dylan Wang rarely speaks openly about negative emotions publicly. For many fans, the message felt unusually honest and unexpectedly vulnerable coming from someone often known for being loud, energetic, and constantly joking around on variety shows himself.
Shortly afterwards, Dylan Wang Studio released a much longer statement defending the actor and highlighting the amount of work he allegedly carried throughout filming.
According to the studio, he spent most of production constantly checking details, handling responsibilities as the inn manager, helping coordinate behind-the-scenes matters, and taking care of staff and guests throughout the programme.
The statement also directly addressed criticism accusing him of being overly emotional. According to the studio, being “sensitive” should not automatically be treated as weakness, but rather awareness of atmosphere, emotional boundaries, and social dynamics.
The message ended with a line many fans quickly reposted everywhere online: “You took care of everyone, and we also want to take care of you.”

Meanwhile, Shen Yue eventually responded with her own public apology after her name became heavily tied to the controversy.
She admitted that the “You’re Just Wang Hedi” title was originally her idea, but insisted the intention behind it had been completely different from how viewers interpreted it.
According to Shen Yue, the phrase was meant to encourage Dylan Wang to temporarily let go of his “manager” role during filming and simply relax as himself again rather than constantly carrying responsibilities for everyone around him.

However, she acknowledged that intentions do not automatically erase impact, admitting she failed to properly consider his feelings at the time.
She also attempted to clear up the increasingly viral “secret group chat” issue, which by then had practically become its own side storyline. According to her explanation, there were actually three separate chats that did not include Dylan Wang, but none were supposedly created to isolate him personally.
One group was organised to coordinate support screenings for his new film, another was for a hotpot dinner he would not attend, while the third involved communication with the show’s directors and production team.

Even so, the explanations have not fully stopped the online debate. Chinese social media is now deeply divided between viewers defending Dylan Wang and others arguing that the situation has been blown far out of proportion.
Supporters argue that public embarrassment disguised as “just jokes” can still hurt, especially in front of cameras and millions of viewers. Many fans pointed out that awkward laughter does not always equal genuine comfort, and said the actor likely suppressed his feelings during filming to avoid ruining the atmosphere.
Others, however, accused him of reacting too strongly by posting publicly about it afterwards. Some Cnetz began digging up older clips from his previous variety appearances, arguing that Dylan Wang himself has joked aggressively with other celebrities before without similar backlash happening.
Old moments involving Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Binbin, and Liu Yaowen suddenly resurfaced online again as people debated whether entertainment shows sometimes normalise uncomfortable humour until someone finally speaks up about it.
Ironically, what began as a supposedly funny award segment has now turned into a much larger conversation about boundaries, humour, workplace dynamics in entertainment shows, and how far “playful teasing” can go before it stops being funny entirely.
At the moment, neither side appears fully ready to move on. Some viewers think Shen Yue’s apology was sincere and mature, while others believe the production team should also take responsibility for allowing the segment to air in the first place. Meanwhile, fans continue analysing every facial expression, every livestream clip, and every behind-the-scenes interaction like it is a university-level group project nobody asked for but everyone somehow joined anyway.
