Chinese actor Wang Yilei has found himself at the centre of one of the most chaotic entertainment controversies currently blowing up across Chinese social media after a production team publicly detailed how an entire drama shoot nearly collapsed when their male lead suddenly failed to appear on filming day.
What began as rumours about a missed flight has now spiralled into accusations of poor communication, abandoned productions, script disputes, health concerns and a livestream that somehow managed to make the situation even more confusing.
The controversy exploded after the production team behind vertical short drama Kill That Spring Night released a lengthy statement on 11 May 2026 explaining why they replaced Wang Yilei with actor Yi Hang at the last minute.
According to the team, preparations for filming had already been completed, cast members had travelled to Hengdian, staff were waiting on location and production costs had already been spent when things suddenly went sideways just hours before departure.
The production insisted they had repeatedly checked whether Wang Yilei was fully prepared to join the project before officially moving forward.
On 27 April, they reportedly handed over the first 30 episodes of the script, followed by additional drafts and revisions over the following days. Producers said they openly acknowledged the script still required polishing and claimed they remained willing to revise scenes based on the actor’s feedback right until the final moment.
Things reportedly unravelled on 10 May. Wang Yilei was scheduled to fly to Hengdian at 7.40pm, but according to production staff, the actor’s side suddenly contacted them at around 5pm to reopen discussions about script revisions and informed them he would miss the flight.
Producers later claimed that during the call, Wang Yilei had not even left home yet, which immediately triggered panic across the crew. Somewhere in Hengdian, exhausted staff members were apparently staring at packed equipment cases wondering whether this was still a filming schedule or the beginning of a reality survival programme.

The production team alleged Wang Yilei refused to travel until requested script revisions were completed. At that stage, the situation became far bigger than one delayed flight.
The female lead, crew members, client representatives and technical staff had already arrived on set, accommodation had been arranged and filming schedules were locked in.
According to producers, Wang Yilei’s team allegedly suggested postponing production while revisions continued, an option that reportedly horrified everyone who had already spent days preparing the shoot.
By 11pm, communication reportedly deteriorated further after Wang Yilei’s side claimed the actor was unwell and stopped responding consistently.

Producers said they continued attempting to contact his management until 3.30am while desperately searching for a replacement actor to prevent the entire project collapsing. The statement stressed that the decision to replace Wang Yilei was not pre-planned and only happened after emergency overnight discussions with other available actors.
The controversy intensified when Wang Yilei later addressed the issue himself during a livestream. The actor admitted he had decided to take an indefinite hiatus from the entertainment industry, explaining that both his physical and emotional condition had worsened significantly in recent months.
He revealed he had been diagnosed with depression since September 2025 and said ongoing somatic symptoms had made it increasingly difficult to continue working under pressure.
During the livestream, Wang Yilei appeared reflective and unusually candid. He admitted he may not have cooperated with production teams as fully as expected and acknowledged criticism accusing him of acting difficult was “not entirely unfair”.
The actor apologised to the female lead, her team and staff members involved in the project, while insisting his intention had always been to deliver the best possible version of the drama.

At the same time, however, Wang Yilei also defended his concerns regarding script quality. He claimed repeated revisions and uncertainty surrounding the final script had worsened his condition emotionally and mentally.
According to him, the project never reached a version he felt confident filming. That explanation immediately divided public opinion because it left viewers asking a very obvious question: was this mainly a health issue, a creative disagreement, or both awkwardly crashing into each other at the worst possible moment?
Social media reactions have been absolutely brutal. Chinese netizens quickly revived the nickname “鸽王” or “King of Disappearing”, a mocking label given to celebrities accused of repeatedly cancelling commitments at the last minute.
Screenshots listing several projects Wang Yilei allegedly exited before filming began spread rapidly online, including dramas such as Through the Mist, Mint Night, You Are My Little Happiness, Kill That Spring Night, and Seizing Your Heart.

In several of those cases, Wang Yilei was reportedly replaced shortly before production started. The repeated pattern triggered growing criticism from viewers who argued that regardless of health concerns, sudden exits create massive logistical and financial pressure for crews working in China’s brutally fast-moving vertical drama industry.
The situation became even messier after the director of another project, Through the Mist, spoke publicly during a livestream. According to the director, Wang Yilei had initially shown strong enthusiasm for the project and allegedly requested specific actresses for key female roles.
The director claimed tensions started after one recommended actress declined the drama because she felt the story treated female characters too harshly. From there, the director suggested Wang Yilei became dissatisfied with replacement casting choices and later raised concerns about the script itself.

The director also alleged that Wang Yilei had already completed costume fittings and makeup tests before withdrawing from the project due to a neck injury. According to the director’s account, an informal medical consultation later suggested the injury may not have been serious enough to halt filming entirely.
The production further claimed partial advance payments became another source of dispute after Wang Yilei allegedly refused to return the full amount provided before filming.
Then came perhaps the most dramatic detail of all. The director alleged Wang Yilei warned that fans could potentially target the director online if the situation became public. That accusation alone sent entertainment forums into complete overdrive, with some users accusing the industry of weaponising fan culture while others questioned whether private production disputes should ever be aired publicly in the first place.
Critics argue that if Wang Yilei repeatedly committed to projects before backing out close to filming, then production teams and co-stars inevitably paid the price. Cnetz noted that professionalism and personal wellbeing are not mutually exclusive conversations, especially when large crews depend on stable scheduling to keep productions alive.
For now, Kill That Spring Night continues filming with Yi Hang stepping into the lead role, while Wang Yilei remains on hiatus with no confirmed timeline for return.
