Huang Yi suddenly found herself back in Weibo’s trending topics this week after entertainment bloggers claimed the actress had been spotted repeatedly entering the same Shanghai apartment with a mystery man. The gossip cycle moved at full speed, the internet started playing detective within minutes, and then Huang Yi stepped in herself with the kind of response that basically said: everyone calm down immediately.
The rumours started after Chinese entertainment paparazzi released footage showing the 48-year-old actress dining with a man on multiple occasions in Shanghai. According to the reports, the pair were first seen leaving a restaurant together before returning to the same apartment complex late at night.
A few days later, they reportedly appeared again alongside mutual friends at another gathering before once again heading back to the same residence together. What pushed the story even further was an earlier online rumour from 11 May hinting that a “female actress famous for Princess Pearl with two marriages and a younger ex-boyfriend” had been spotted with a mystery man.
Internet users quickly connected the clues to Huang Yi, who famously played Xiao Yanzi in Princess Pearl 3 and has openly spoken in past interviews and variety shows about her personal relationships.

But before speculation could spiral into full melodrama territory, Huang Yi directly addressed the rumours on her personal Weibo account on 18 May. Her clarification was blunt, calm and honestly a bit tired in tone, as if she had already watched the internet write three fictional wedding scripts before breakfast.
“Just a work partner, please stop guessing. We’ve known each other for many years and there’s nothing else. Thank you everyone for the concern and attention,” she wrote.

That single statement quickly cooled down much of the discussion online, although not before netizens had already turned the topic into one of Weibo’s hottest entertainment conversations of the week. Some fans praised Huang Yi for responding quickly instead of allowing rumours to drag on for days, while others joked that Chinese entertainment bloggers deserve Olympic medals for transforming “two people leaving dinner” into “possible secret soulmate situation”.
However, not all Chinese netizens are fully convinced by Huang Yi’s clarification just yet. Some Weibo users pointed out that this was not the first time she had been spotted alongside the same man, with the pair reportedly appearing together on multiple occasions over recent weeks.
Because of that, a section of c-netz continues to believe the two may actually be in a relationship and are simply choosing to keep things private for now. Others joked that “work partner” has practically become the entertainment industry’s most overused phrase whenever celebrity romance rumours start trending online.

To gossip bloggers, this apparently counted as definitive romance evidence. To many ordinary viewers online, it mostly looked like two adults who possibly live near each other and had social plans.
The standards for celebrity dating “proof” on entertainment forums continue to remain impressively low. Rather than criticising the actress, many commenters expressed happiness at simply seeing Huang Yi looking relaxed and cheerful again after years of highly publicised personal struggles. Others argued that even if she were dating, it should hardly be treated like breaking international news.
