The filming of Northern Wei Dynasty (江山大同) has barely begun, yet the 300 million yuan historical epic is already facing mounting scrutiny over on-set decisions and growing doubts about its narrative direction.

Positioned as a landmark production centred on a powerful Empress Dowager, the drama stars Yang Mi in a demanding dual role alongside Liu Xueyi, but early controversies have shifted attention away from its scale and ambition towards questions of creative intent and production handling.

Set against the volatile Northern Wei period, the drama charts the rise of Feng Yan’er, tracing her journey from palace outsider to a formidable political force, while revisiting the legacy of Feng Sui, whose sacrifice shapes the dynasty’s future.

Yang Mi’s portrayal spans decades, requiring a layered transformation rarely seen in recent historical dramas.

Opposite her, Liu Xueyi’s Tuoba Jun is positioned as both ally and counterweight, anchoring a storyline built on political calculation, personal loyalty and imperial duty.

The project has drawn notable attention for foregrounding a female ruler’s perspective, a narrative angle still uncommon in mainstream period productions.

However, that positioning is now under question. Reports circulating among viewers and industry watchers suggest that the script may not fully deliver on its “female-centric” promise.

Alleged revisions appear to reframe key political achievements of Feng Yan’er as shared efforts with Tuoba Jun, diluting the independence that initially defined the character.

This has led to accusations of a so-called “yin-yang script”, where the marketed premise diverges from what is being filmed.

The involvement of veteran screenwriter Jin Haishu, who is said to have developed the story over a decade, has only intensified the debate, with some arguing the project retains the structure of an earlier, more male-led narrative.

Compounding the issue is a separate controversy involving fan support at the filming site. Decorations and banners prepared by Yang Mi’s supporters were reportedly removed by production staff without notice, with the explanation that it was necessary to maintain balance among the cast.

The decision has been widely criticised online, particularly given Yang Mi’s standing and her recent career momentum following renewed recognition for her performance in This Thriving Land (生万物)

For many fans, the incident signalled a lack of respect rather than an attempt at neutrality.

Reaction across social platforms has been sharply divided. Some netizens argue that production teams must manage on-set optics carefully to avoid favouritism, especially in ensemble casts.

Others see the flag removal as unnecessary and dismissive, fuelling broader concerns about how the production values its lead actress. On the script front, discussion has grown more pointed.

Supporters of Yang Mi have questioned whether the drama is quietly shifting focus towards Liu Xueyi’s character, while neutral observers have called for restraint, noting that early script leaks do not always reflect the final edit. Still, the consistency of these concerns has kept the topic trending.

The stakes are unusually high. As one of the few large-scale dramas to centre on a historical female political figure, Northern Wei Dynasty carries expectations beyond ratings alone.

It is being watched as a test of whether mainstream productions are willing to commit fully to female-led storytelling without compromise.

Any perceived retreat from that premise risks undermining both its narrative credibility and its wider cultural positioning.

For now, the production continues under intense public gaze, with each update closely dissected by fans and critics alike. Whether Northern Wei Dynasty can realign its storytelling with its original promise or remains caught between competing narratives will likely define its reception long before it reaches the screen. As debate intensifies, audiences are not just watching the drama unfold on set, but shaping its discourse in real time—so where do you stand on the script changes and fan treatment?
