Zhao Lusi is heading back to work, and this time she is not returning with another sugary romance wrapped in soft lighting and accidental eye contact. The Chinese actress has confirmed she will resume filming this summer, with a new drama expected to focus on the realities, mindsets and lifestyles of modern women. After a lengthy pause from acting, the message was clear: she is coming back, but on her own terms.

Speaking during a cosmetics brand livestream event in Shanghai on 18 April, Zhao Lusi said she plans to return to set between June and August. For fans who have spent months surviving on old clips, reposted interviews and wishful thinking, it was the update they had been waiting for.

The actress has kept a lower profile since her previous project Lovers (恋人) was suspended in late 2024, leading to a 16-month gap from regular filming work.

Rather than rushing into the next glossy script available, Zhao explained she wanted to make sure she was fully prepared before stepping back into production.

She said she feels better during summer and did not want to return before she was ready. In entertainment terms, that is a rare sentence. Too often stars are expected to appear instantly refreshed after burnout, as if rest comes with overnight delivery.

Her next project may also surprise viewers who still associate her mainly with youthful romance dramas. During the same livestream, Zhao Lusi hinted that the new series will centre on “the mindset and lifestyle of modern women”.

That suggests a more grounded story, likely focused on everyday pressures, ambition, relationships, independence and the chaos of trying to have a life while everyone asks what your five-year plan is.

It would mark a noticeable shift from the image many audiences first embraced when she rose to fame through Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住)

That drama helped cement her popularity as one of the most recognisable faces in youth romance television. But stars who remain in one lane too long often end up trapped there, smiling politely in the same role for ten years. A sharper, more mature project could be exactly the reset she needs.

Earlier this year, in a February livestream, Zhao spoke candidly about her caution over returning too soon. She said if she rushed back to set and created production issues, she might never act again.

It was an unusually honest remark from a major star and reflected a more careful attitude towards work, health and responsibility. In short, she seems less interested in speed and more interested in longevity.

During her hiatus, the actress focused on recovery after previously stepping back amid anxiety and exhaustion.

She has since said she better understands her physical limits and wants to work only when emotionally stable. That may sound simple, but in a fast-moving industry built on schedules, trends and endless rumours, it is quietly radical.

And rumours there have been. Social media has spent months attaching Zhao Lusi to nearly every high-profile script available, as if casting directors simply spin a wheel with her name on it.

Her fandom account on Weibo recently denied several reports linking her to multiple discussed projects, cooling speculation around an S+ fantasy production that had been heavily debated online.

Instead, attention now turns to the confirmed summer comeback and what this women-focused drama could actually look like.

There is also talk that the project may integrate brand placements more naturally into the story from episode one. If done well, viewers may barely notice. If done badly, expect emotional scenes interrupted by suspiciously well-lit skincare products.

Outside acting, Zhao Lusi is also preparing for a concert in Bangkok on 9 May, where she is expected to perform five unreleased songs. Balancing music and drama plans, she said staying in good condition takes time to build slowly. It was a calm answer, and probably the wisest one in an industry addicted to hurry.

Online reaction has been mixed but lively. Many fans celebrated her return, saying they missed seeing her on screen and were happy she prioritised health first.

Others are especially curious about a more realistic women-led drama, arguing it could show a different side of her acting range. Some netizens, naturally, are already demanding casting news, trailers and broadcast dates before filming has even started. Patience remains a fictional concept online.

Whether this comeback becomes one of the year’s biggest returns or simply a steady new chapter, Zhao Lusi has regained control of the narrative.

She is returning when ready, choosing a different direction and refusing to be rushed. That alone may be the strongest move of all. What do you think her next drama should look like, and is this the career shift fans have been waiting for?
