Love Beyond the Grave has finished airing, but the ending debate is only getting louder. Fans who stayed until the final scene expected closure, answers, maybe a little emotional peace. Instead, many were left staring at the screen like they had just opened an empty parcel.
While the drama starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Arthur Chen delivered heartbreak and atmosphere, viewers now say the original novel gave the story a far stronger and more satisfying finish.
The series is adapted from Li Qing Ran’s novel Bai Ri Ti Deng (Lamp of the Daylight), and for most of its run the drama followed the source material’s emotional core. But when it came to the ending, the production chose a heavier route.
In the official finale, Duan Xu reaches the limit of his body after the transfer with He Simu and passes away in her arms on their wedding night. Romantic? Yes. Cruel? Also yes. Whoever approved that level of pain clearly had confidence.
Yet the story does continue in a strange, ghostly way. Duan Xu remains beside He Simu in a jellyfish-like spirit form while she gives up her throne as Ghost King and wanders the mortal world.
The final conversation involving He Jia Feng Yi and Zi Ji hints at larger truths, but offers little certainty. It is one of those endings where the credits roll before your confusion does.

That is where much of the criticism begins. Many viewers felt Zi Ji was built up as someone important, only to become the elegant bystander of the century.
She appears around key moments, listens to serious discussions, looks mysterious, and then mostly does... very little. A role wrapped in intrigue but short on payoff naturally left audiences frustrated.
In the novel, however, Zi Ji’s presence carries real weight because the world itself is more clearly defined. Fate is governed by strict laws.
Seasons turn, people are born, people age, lives end, and divine beings are not meant to casually interfere. There is order, structure, consequence. Basically, the universe in the novel actually has management.
Within that system, He Simu is born as a ghost with almost no personal desire and is destined to become Ghost King, preserving balance in the underworld.
He Jia Feng Yi, meanwhile, comes from the Mars lineage and is blessed with intelligence, sincerity and strength, while also carrying a fragile body and shortened lifespan. He is talented, noble and permanently arguing with destiny, which is admittedly a strong character setup.
The conflict grows sharper when Feng Yi openly challenges heaven’s order. In the novel, he later ascends and directly confronts Zi Ji.
Their exchange is not about force, but ideology. Feng Yi questions whether fate should remain cold and rigid, while Zi Ji argues that changing even one thread could unravel everything. It gives the story depth the drama only briefly touches before hurrying away.
He Simu also senses Zi Ji is far more than she seems and confronts her, though answers remain hidden for much of the story.
That mystery matters because the novel eventually rewards patience. Unlike the drama, where secrets sometimes feel decorative, the book uses them with purpose.

Near the end of the novel, after Duan Xu falls in He Simu’s arms, Zi Ji finally intervenes. She alters their destinies by transferring part of He Simu’s lifespan to Duan Xu, allowing him more time in the mortal world.
He Simu is released from her burden as Ghost King and becomes human again. It is emotional, logical and earned. Imagine that: setup leading to payoff.
Only in the extra chapters is Zi Ji’s true identity revealed. She is Si Ming, the divine overseer who has maintained order for thousands of years.
Suddenly, all those quiet scenes and cryptic appearances make sense. Mystery solved, arc completed, audience respected.
Interestingly, the drama briefly shows an alternate version where Zi Ji changes Duan Xu and He Simu’s fate after his passing, borrowing from the novel’s resolution.
But because it is not presented as the main ending, many viewers saw it as a tease rather than true closure. Giving fans the better ending in passing is certainly a bold creative decision.
Viewers praised the drama for choosing a bittersweet finale and staying emotionally brave.
Others argued it confused tragedy with depth and ignored the stronger narrative logic already sitting in the source material. Many readers said the novel feels fuller because every major character, especially Zi Ji, actually matters by the end.
That is the real difference between the two versions. The drama says some losses cannot be changed.
The novel says fate may be strict, but not untouchable. One leaves viewers grieving. The other leaves them satisfied. Both are emotional, but only one feels complete.
