Chinese actress Yang Zi is trending again after a candid moment from a brand live stream on 28 February went viral across social media. While promoting her latest drama project in an elegant Republic-era costume, it wasn’t just her classic look that caught attention, but her unexpectedly blunt answer about what “loving yourself” really means.

During the live broadcast, the host casually asked Yang Zi how people should practise self-love. Without hesitation, she replied with a short but punchy line: “Eat less, sleep more, jie se.”

The phrase instantly set the tone for the session, drawing laughter from the host, crew, and viewers watching in real time.

She quickly added that these habits help keep the body’s energy full and stable.

Realising her words sounded a bit too honest for a polished promo event, Yang Zi shyly covered her face while laughing, making the moment even more memorable.

The contrast between her graceful, old-school styling and her no-filter answer became the clip’s biggest hook.

Clips from the live stream spread rapidly, with many netizens praising Yang Zi for being refreshingly real. Fans described her as “authentic”, “relatable”, and “someone who doesn’t force a perfect celebrity image”.

The viral moment sparked jokes, memes, and discussions across platforms, pushing her name straight into trending topics.

The phrase “jie se” quickly became the most debated part of her comment. Literally, it can sound extreme, but Yang Zi and several content creators soon clarified the meaning.

Rather than a strict or literal rule, it refers to stepping away from emotional burnout, avoiding unhealthy relationships, and not wasting energy on people or situations that drain you.

Many fans appreciated the explanation, saying it reflects a more balanced lifestyle. “Eat less” was understood as mindful eating, not extreme dieting. “Sleep more” resonated strongly with exhausted workers and students.

And “jie se” became shorthand for emotional boundaries and self-respect, not avoidance of love itself.

Netizen reactions varied but stayed largely positive. Some joked that their lives are the complete opposite of her advice, while others admitted her words hit uncomfortably close to home.

A few even said it was the most practical self-care advice they’d heard from a celebrity in a long time.

What do you think about Yang Zi’s “three-step self-love formula”? Does it match your own way of taking care of yourself, or would you rewrite it completely?
