The upcoming Chinese wuxia mystery drama The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng (凤舞九天) is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated series in the Chinese television slate. Backed by Tencent Video and Lemon Pictures, the production revives the legendary martial arts world created by Gu Long and places a modern visual scale around one of the most iconic characters in wuxia fiction. With Gong Jun leading the cast, the drama has quickly become a talking point among C-drama fans long before its official premiere date.
Directed by Zhou Jingtao, the series will run for 40 episodes and stream on WeTV / Tencent Video. Filming began in March 2026 and follows a typical long production schedule for large wuxia projects. If post-production proceeds on the usual timeline, the drama is widely expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027, with early 2027 considered the most realistic release window.
Adapted from Gu Long’s classic novel series Lu Xiao Feng Chuan Qi (陆小凤传奇), the drama follows a legendary martial artist known not only for his fighting ability but also his brilliant mind for solving mysteries.
In the vast Jianghu world, strange and dangerous cases appear without warning. Wherever the truth hides, Lu Xiaofeng follows.
Armed with his famous Lingxi Finger technique, Lu Xiaofeng walks into danger with unusual calm. Yet his strength lies not just in martial arts but in the allies around him. Among them is Hua Manlou, the gentle yet perceptive blind swordsman, and Ximen Chuixue, a cold and unmatched master of the sword.

Together they confront conspiracies, unravel baffling mysteries, and uncover a shadow quietly growing within the martial world. Justice in Jianghu proves fragile, loyalty is constantly tested, and every case leads them closer to a deeper conspiracy.
The narrative reportedly centres on twelve interconnected cases shaking the martial world, with a mysterious organisation known as the Wuwang Pavilion playing a key role in maintaining balance.
One of the main reasons the project drew immediate attention is its casting.
Gong Jun takes on the iconic role of Lu Xiaofeng, a character instantly recognisable by his distinctive moustache and beard known as the “four eyebrows”. Fans have noted that Gong Jun’s relaxed charisma fits the character’s clever yet carefree personality.
Joining him are several familiar faces from Chinese television:
-
Zheng Yecheng as Ximen Chuixue, the famously cold sword master
-
Wang Yilun as the mysterious Jade Rakshasa
-
Quan Yilun as Hua Manlou, the noble blind martial artist
The drama will also introduce numerous supporting characters as each mystery arc unfolds, a structure faithful to Gu Long’s original storytelling style.

Production for The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng is designed on a large scale rarely seen in modern wuxia dramas.
Filming is scheduled for around 140 days, with major locations including Hengdian World Studios, the Alashan desert, and several landscapes in Xinjiang. Nearly 60 percent of the scenes are being filmed in real desert environments, aiming to recreate the vast and lonely atmosphere of Jianghu described in the novels.
This approach signals Tencent’s attempt to bring back a more cinematic style to wuxia storytelling, combining large outdoor sets with traditional martial arts choreography.
For international viewers, the easiest way to watch the series will be through WeTV, Tencent’s global streaming platform.
Once the drama premieres, episodes are expected to be released simultaneously or shortly after the Chinese broadcast with English subtitles available for global audiences. WeTV regularly provides subtitled releases for major Chinese dramas, particularly high-profile productions like this one.
Depending on regional availability, fans may be able to watch through the WeTV mobile app or its international streaming platform, where most Tencent dramas appear in weekly episode drops.
Unlike many modern wuxia series that focus mainly on action or romance, The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng blends martial arts adventure with detective-style mystery.
Each case challenges Lu Xiaofeng’s intelligence as much as his martial ability. The story is expected to move between investigations, sword fights, hidden conspiracies, and the complicated relationships between Jianghu’s most powerful figures.
The dynamic between Lu Xiaofeng, Hua Manlou and Ximen Chuixue is also likely to form the emotional core of the story, reflecting the strong friendship themes present in Gu Long’s original novels..

Many viewers welcomed Gong Jun’s casting, saying his calm aura matches Lu Xiaofeng’s famous laid-back charm. Others praised the decision to maintain the character’s signature facial hair, a small detail that long-time wuxia readers consider essential.
Some fans are cautiously optimistic, noting that Gu Long adaptations are notoriously difficult to execute well on screen. However, the scale of production and Tencent’s investment have raised expectations that this version could deliver a more faithful and visually ambitious adaptation.
There is also strong curiosity around the mystery-driven narrative structure, which sets the drama apart from standard historical romance series.
Several factors explain the rising anticipation.
First, Gu Long’s novels remain some of the most respected works in wuxia literature. Second, the cast brings together actors with established fanbases. And finally, the production scale suggests Tencent is positioning the drama as a major period project rather than a routine television series.
For wuxia fans, the return of Lu Xiaofeng to television could mark one of the genre’s biggest moments in recent years.
With filming now underway, viewers may still have a long wait before the premiere arrives. But judging from the early reactions, The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng (凤舞九天) is already on track to become one of the most discussed Chinese dramas of its release year.
What do you think about Gong Jun stepping into the role of Lu Xiaofeng, and are you planning to watch this new wuxia mystery when it premieres?
