The historical drama Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) has shaken up its viewing routine just as its popularity peaks. On 15 March 2026, the production abruptly confirmed that VIP subscribers would receive only one new episode per day instead of the previous two. The sudden shift immediately rattled the Chinese online drama community, where viewers had grown accustomed to the faster pace.

Within hours, discussion about the schedule change exploded across Chinese social media. Hashtags including “Pursuit of Jade switches to single daily updates,” “VIP double updates become single updates,” and “drama fans fall into update anxiety” surged to the top of trending lists. The topics accumulated hundreds of millions of views as fans rushed online to debate the decision.

According to the official notice, the revised schedule began on 15 March. VIP users, who previously enjoyed two episodes per day, now receive just one daily instalment. Non-VIP viewers continue to follow the same schedule as before.

For many viewers, the adjustment felt abrupt. The double-episode release format had become part of fans’ daily viewing routine, especially for those following the story closely. Cutting the number of episodes in half therefore disrupted the rhythm many had built around the series.

Interestingly, the shift was not entirely unexpected for some overseas audiences. The global platform WeTV had quietly listed the revised release calendar on 14 March, including the move to a single daily episode.

Yet the update attracted little attention internationally until Chinese social media picked up the story the following day.

The reaction reflects just how strong the drama’s momentum has become. Since its debut, Pursuit of Jade has rapidly positioned itself as one of the standout costume dramas of 2026.

Directed by Zeng Qingjie and starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, the series blends romance, political intrigue and character-driven storytelling.

Platform performance numbers underline the surge in popularity. On Tencent Video, the drama’s heat index has exceeded 31,000, while iQIYI’s popularity score has crossed 10,000. Yunhe data shows its effective episode streaming share reaching 41.1 percent, placing it among the strongest-performing dramas currently on air.

The drama’s premise has also helped distinguish it from conventional historical romances. Adapted from the novel Hou Fu Ren Yu Sha Zhu Dao (侯夫人与杀猪刀) by Tuanzi Laixi, the story focuses on two equally formidable protagonists whose relationship develops through mutual strength rather than the familiar “naive heroine and dominant hero” trope.

Tian Xiwei plays Fan Changyu, the spirited daughter of a butcher whose courage propels her from ordinary village life into the world of warfare and political intrigue. Her journey—from wielding a butcher’s knife to wearing armour on the battlefield—forms one of the drama’s central arcs.

Opposite her, Zhang Linghe portrays Xie Zheng, a nobleman forced to conceal his identity after the destruction of his family. The actor reportedly lost around 7.5 kilograms to shape the character’s fragile yet determined appearance, reflecting a man burdened by revenge and responsibility.

The production has also drawn praise for memorable scenes and cultural detail. Viewers frequently highlight moments such as the snowy night encounter between the leads, a tense sequence hiding in a pigsty, and a playful scene involving candied dried tangerine peel.

Traditional art forms, including Qin opera and shadow puppetry, further enrich the drama’s visual style.

Once the schedule change was announced, fan comment sections filled rapidly with mixed reactions.

Some viewers voiced frustration, arguing that the slower release pace interrupts the drama’s growing tension. One comment widely shared online read, “The story is finally reaching its most exciting point, and now we only get one episode a day.”

Others responded with humour. A popular remark joked that “two episodes were already not enough—one episode feels like a snack instead of dinner.”

Yet not all reactions were negative.

A number of fans suggested that slowing the pace could help maintain production quality, particularly given the drama’s visually polished cinematography.

Scenes from the series are often described by viewers as “wallpaper-worthy”, with carefully composed lighting and costume design.

Ironically, the schedule change appears to have intensified fan engagement rather than weakened it. Online communities are now filled with scene breakdowns, screenshots, and detailed speculation about the drama’s political plotlines.

Some viewers have even assembled complex timelines analysing character motivations and hidden clues embedded within earlier episodes. These discussions continue to circulate widely, keeping the drama in constant online conversation.

In many ways, the so-called “update anxiety” reflects a deeper truth: audiences are heavily invested in the story. The intense reaction shows that Pursuit of Jade has captured viewers’ attention in a way that few dramas manage.

With the release pace now slowed, fans will have to adjust to a longer wait between plot developments. For some, however, the extra time may allow closer analysis of the drama’s layered storytelling. Whether the schedule change proves frustrating or beneficial remains to be seen. One thing is clear: viewers are watching closely.

What do you think about the switch to single-episode updates? Are slower releases building suspense, or just testing fans’ patience?
