The ratings are officially in, and The 76th NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen has delivered a long-awaited comeback moment. The iconic New Year’s Eve music show recorded a 35.2% household rating for Part Two in the Kanto area, marking its strongest performance in three years and signalling renewed audience interest.

Part One of the broadcast also showed clear improvement, pulling in 30.8%, up from last year’s 29.0%. Together, the numbers confirm a solid rebound after 2024’s historic dip and place the 2025 edition firmly back in “safe territory” by industry standards.

A Clear Ratings Recovery After a Difficult Period

Last year’s (2024) Kouhaku struggled, with Part Two landing at 32.7%, one of the weakest results since the two-part format began in 1989. This time (2025), rise of 2.5 percentage points in Part Two and 1.8 points in Part One represents a noticeable turnaround.

While the broadcast did not reach the once-common 40% milestone, crossing the 35% line again for the first time since 2022 is widely seen as a symbolic win, especially as traditional TV viewing continues to face challenges from streaming platforms.

NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen 2025 Ratings Surge Past 35 Percent After Three Years

Held live from NHK Hall in Shibuya on New Year’s Eve, the 2025 show carried extra weight as part of Japan’s broadcasting centenary celebrations

The theme, centred on connection and continuity, shaped both the programme’s structure and its emotional tone throughout the night.

The hosting lineup blended experience with freshness, bringing together familiar faces and newer stars to appeal across generations, a move that appears to have paid off.

Line-Up Balance Played a Key Role

One of the strongest factors behind the ratings lift was the carefully balanced artist roster.

New-generation acts such as FRUITS ZIPPER and M!LK made their first appearances, while veteran performers like AKB48 returned to the Kouhaku stage after long absences.

Special appearances from legendary artists added further weight to the night, delivering a sense of occasion that many viewers felt had been missing in recent years.

The final stretch of the programme was especially memorable, with emotional performances marking career milestones, farewells, and long-standing legacies.

Personal Ratings Also Show Positive Movement

Beyond household figures, personal viewership numbers also climbed. Part One reached 23.2%, while Part Two hit 26.4%, both higher than last year and the strongest personal ratings seen in several editions.

These numbers suggest the show did more than just attract background viewing; it actively held audience attention, especially during the latter half of the night.

Why This Matters for Kouhaku’s Future

In an era where long-running TV specials often struggle to stay relevant, Kouhaku’s 2025 rebound sends a clear message: with the right mix of nostalgia, fresh talent, and live atmosphere, appointment viewing still has power.

The challenge now is consistency. Whether this momentum can carry into future editions will depend on how well the programme continues to evolve while keeping its core identity intact.

What did you think of this year’s Kouhaku? Did the line-up and performances bring back the excitement for you, or do you think there’s still room for improvement?
