Regina Ho Finally Explains Why She’s Missing from The Queen of News 2

The long-awaited Season 2 of TVB’s hit drama The Queen of News has finally landed, but fans quickly noticed something missing – or rather, someone. Regina Ho, who stole the spotlight in Season 1 as Tsui Hiu Mei, is nowhere to be seen this time round. Her character’s journey from gentle rookie to sharp, ambitious anchor was one of the breakout arcs of the series, so her absence immediately sparked discussion online.

After days of speculation, Regina Ho addressed the situation directly through her social media, admitting she genuinely fought to return. According to her statement, she pushed hard behind the scenes to reprise her fan-favourite role.

However, Season 1’s storyline structure, paired with scheduling limitations, meant she ultimately couldn’t join the cast this time.

She also dismissed rumours suggesting any tension with leading actress Charmaine Sheh, emphasising that there was no conflict at all.

Regina wrote, “Just like all of you, I really miss Xu Xiaowei. This character is extremely important to my acting career. I really did fight for the chance to return, but because of Season 1’s plot direction and my schedule, I wasn’t able to appear. If The Queen of News 3 happens, I promise I’ll try again so Tsui Hiu Mei can make a strong comeback. But I can’t guarantee she will return in the end, since there are many factors the company must consider when producing dramas.”

Actor Salaries for The Queen of News 2 Allegedly Leak Online, Sparking Debate

While Regina’s absence was already a hot topic, the drama found itself back in the spotlight when a list claiming to reveal cast salaries began circulating on Weibo.

The figures sparked immediate debate, with many netizens shocked at how “affordable” the numbers seemed for a major TVB drama.

Despite the modest figures, The Queen of News 2 continues to draw strong praise, particularly for Charmaine Sheh, whose portrayal of “Sister Man” remains a major highlight.

Cast members such as Bosco Wong, Lee Sze Kei, Samantha Ko, Kenneth Ma, Selena Lee, Venus Wong and Shaun Tam have also received warm responses from viewers.

According to the leaked list, the cast reportedly saw a raise compared to Season 1.

Charmaine Sheh is said to have earned around 100,000 HKD, a notable jump from the 47,000 HKD she received previously.

Bosco Wong reportedly earned about 50,000 HKD, while Samantha Ko is listed at approximately 35,000 HKD, rising from 28,000 HKD.

Selena Lee was allegedly paid around 50,000 HKD, up from 31,000 HKD.

Kenneth Ma reportedly received 42,000 HKD during Season 1, while Venus Wong and Shaun Tam were listed at 20,000 HKD.

Matthew Ho’s figure, meanwhile, sits at a relatively modest 11,000 HKD.

These numbers triggered a wave of discussion about the state of Hong Kong drama production budgets and how they compare to mainland China’s far larger budgets.

Many viewers argued that Hong Kong actors deliver consistently strong performances despite receiving significantly lower fees, praising them for offering genuine “value for money” in today’s drama landscape.
