The Eternal Fragrance (千香) has officially wrapped its 33-episode run on Youku, bringing director Kuk Kok Leung's romantic wuxia fantasy to an emotional conclusion that stayed true to its sweeping themes of love, sacrifice and destiny. Led by Song Weilong as Lei Xiu Yuan/Ye Sha and Ju Jingyi as Jiang Li Fei/Xiao Bang Chui, the series never shied away from difficult choices, but its final episode delivered enough heartbreaking twists to leave viewers debating whether the ending was beautiful, frustrating or somewhere in between. It is the kind of finale that hurts first and explains itself later.

Adapted from Shi Si Lang's novel Qian Xiang Yin, the drama followed an orphan searching for belonging before discovering she carried a destiny capable of reshaping the Three Realms. Alongside her stood Lei Xiu Yuan, whose unwavering devotion became the emotional centre of the story.

While the fantasy battles, immortal clans and ancient prophecies created an impressive backdrop, the heart of the series always rested on two people desperately trying to choose each other despite a world determined to pull them apart.

The supporting cast also played important roles throughout the journey, with Zhao Huawei, Liu Mengrui, Zhang Zhihao, Zhu Lilan, Ye Shengjia, Zheng Hehuizi, Xue Ba Yi, Liang Yong Ni, Fu Fang Jun, He Zhong Hua and many others helping build an expansive fantasy world where every alliance carried consequences and every betrayal left lasting scars.

From the moment the finale begins, there is barely a chance for anyone to breathe. Qiongqi launches his brutal assault against the immortal sects, hunting survivors one by one while panic spreads across the battlefield.

Deng Xi Guang arrives to rescue those still standing, but the situation quickly spirals beyond anyone's control as Lei Xiu Yuan falls deeper into the influence of his demonic nature. Instead of remaining the loyal protector viewers have followed throughout the drama, he becomes consumed by the overwhelming desire to absorb the power of the sacred Jianmu.

Even while facing the transformed Lei Xiu Yuan, Jiang Li Fei desperately tries reaching the man she still believes exists beneath the darkness. She reminds him of the promise he once made—that he would never hurt her.

It is one of the series' most emotionally charged callbacks because viewers know how much that promise has defined their relationship from the very beginning. Unfortunately, fate refuses to make things easy. Zhao Yue arrives hoping to save Jiang Li Fei, only to be struck down by Lei Xiu Yuan himself.

The shocking moment immediately convinces Jiang Li Fei that the person standing before her is no longer Lei Xiu Yuan but Ye Sha completely consumed by darkness. Furious and heartbroken, she attacks him with everything she has.

Yet behind the battle lies a hidden truth that neither she nor anyone else understands in that moment. Inside his own mind, Lei Xiu Yuan silently reminds himself that forcing Jiang Li Fei to break through her final seal is the only way she can survive what is coming.

Every attack he launches is another painful step towards protecting the woman he loves, even if it means becoming the villain in her eyes. Once Jiang Li Fei finally breaks through her seal and awakens her true strength, the atmosphere changes completely.

Lei Xiu Yuan reaches out his hand one final time, almost as though hoping everything can still be fixed. Instead, Jiang Li Fei strikes him with a devastating blow that leaves him coughing blood. Rather than showing regret, Lei Xiu Yuan quietly smiles before telling her he has finally kept his promise.

This time, he did not betray her. As the mystical Qian Xiang Yin slowly disappears from his hand, so does his physical existence. Jiang Li Fei watches helplessly as the man she loves fades away before she can even touch him one last time. It is one of the drama's most heartbreaking scenes because there are no dramatic speeches left, only grief.

His disappearance carries consequences far beyond their relationship. The moment Lei Xiu Yuan vanishes, every member of the demonic race begins disappearing as well, confirming that his existence had become inseparable from theirs.

Jiang Li Fei collapses under the weight of overwhelming guilt, convinced she should have been the one to die instead. The victory against darkness feels hollow because the greatest personal loss arrives at exactly the same moment.

When Ji Tong Zhou arrives, he finds Jiang Li Fei completely broken. Before anyone can properly mourn, another conflict begins. Deng Xi Guang discovers Zhao Yue's body and demands to know who killed her. Rather than hiding behind excuses, Jiang Li Fei openly accepts responsibility.

Her confession immediately places her in danger once again as several members of the cultivation world insist she must answer for everything that happened. Ji Tong Zhou refuses to abandon her, placing himself firmly at her side despite growing political pressure.

Even Deng Xi Guang recognises that without Jiang Li Fei, everyone gathered there would already have fallen. His decision to stop further retaliation becomes one of the finale's few moments of compassion.

Later, Jiang Li Fei buries Zhao Yue herself, surrounding the grave with flowers and fresh grass through her spiritual power. The quiet scene carries more emotional weight than another battle ever could.

Deng Xi Guang brings food as an offering and gently reminds Jiang Li Fei that Zhao Yue would never blame her. Instead of seeking revenge, the series chooses forgiveness, showing that healing sometimes begins with accepting unbearable loss.

Another emotional farewell arrives as Chong Yi buries Master Guang Wei. Jiang Li Fei worries about everyone she might still endanger, while Chong Yi reminds her that those who sacrificed themselves did so hoping she would continue living rather than drown in endless regret.

His words become increasingly meaningful after revealing that Master Guang Wei used the last of his spiritual power to protect Chong Yi's mind from falling into darkness. Even after death, the older generation continues protecting those left behind.

Elsewhere, political ambition quietly begins replacing battlefield conflict. Mr Luo approaches Ji Tong Zhou with the proposal of controlling Jiang Li Fei to dominate the cultivation world.

Ji Tong Zhou immediately rejects the idea, declaring that anyone attempting to harm her will have to face him first. His loyalty demonstrates how much the characters have grown since the beginning of the series, when personal survival often mattered more than moral conviction.

One of the finale's most fascinating sequences comes when Luocha and Qiongqi secretly recover Lei Xiu Yuan's physical body. Although unconscious, fragments of his past begin resurfacing.

Viewers finally witness more of his childhood, learning how Qing Cheng recognised kindness within him despite his frightening origins. Those memories reinforce that Lei Xiu Yuan was never born evil. Circumstance, manipulation and destiny shaped his tragedy far more than personal choice ever did.

Meanwhile, Deng Xi Guang faces a different challenge. Members of Wuyue Court insist he become their new leader, something he desperately wishes to avoid. His reluctance creates several lighter moments before an emotional encounter changes everything.

Standing before Zhao Yue's grave, he imagines her spirit reminding him that running away would only dishonour everyone who sacrificed themselves. Inspired by her words, he finally accepts responsibility and vows to protect the next generation.

Jiang Li Fei still refuses to believe Lei Xiu Yuan might return. Although Ji Tong Zhou points out that Luocha rescued his body before it disappeared completely, the vanished Qian Xiang Yin convinces her he is truly gone.

It is a subtle detail carrying enormous emotional meaning because the bond that once connected them has seemingly disappeared. The story then slows down to explore the cost of survival.

Jiang Li Fei visits Chong Yi at the ruined Hu She Peak, where both quietly reflect on friends they have lost. Chong Yi jokes about her cooking one last time before breaking down emotionally after imagining Qing Cheng and Master Guang Wei standing beside him. The moment perfectly captures how grief often arrives after the fighting ends rather than during it.

Just when peace appears possible, another twist arrives. Luocha reveals Lei Xiu Yuan has remained unconscious for seven days and promises she will eventually bring Jiang Li Fei to him.

At the same time, Ye Sha delivers the swords of Ye Ye and his companions, demanding Jiang Li Fei be exchanged if they ever hope to see Lei Xiu Yuan again. The conflict is clearly far from over.

Perhaps the most unexpected betrayal belongs to Ji Tong Zhou. While Jiang Li Fei searches for the missing Si Mo, fellow disciples dismiss her as nothing more than a burden. Moments later, Ji Tong Zhou secretly knocks her unconscious and begins absorbing the power of Jianmu alongside Miao Qing, believing its energy is the only way to secure enough strength to protect what remains.

Whether motivated by desperation, fear or ambition, his actions transform one of the drama's most dependable allies into its newest moral question mark, ensuring the ending remains far more complicated than a simple victory over evil.

The ending ultimately suggests that defeating destiny never truly ends the struggle. Lei Xiu Yuan's apparent death restores balance, but his preserved body and Luocha's determination strongly imply his story is unfinished.

Jiang Li Fei fulfils her role as the guardian capable of protecting the Three Realms, yet doing so costs her the future she wanted most. Nearly every surviving character walks away carrying emotional wounds rather than celebrating triumph.

The finale argues that genuine heroism is measured less by victory than by the willingness to sacrifice everything for someone else's future. The final episode also reinforces one of the drama's biggest themes: identity is always a choice, even when fate insists otherwise.

Lei Xiu Yuan spends much of the series fearing he will become Ye Sha completely, but his final actions prove love ultimately defines him more than darkness ever could. Jiang Li Fei begins the story searching for a place to belong, only to realise her greatest strength comes from choosing compassion despite endless rejection.

Their love story never receives the peaceful ending many hoped for, yet it succeeds because both characters remain true to themselves until the very end. The finale ends with Lei Xiu Yuan sacrificing himself to free Jiang Li Fei and restore balance, seemingly disappearing along with the demonic race.

Jiang Li Fei survives but is left devastated, blamed by some and protected by loyal friends. Political struggles continue, Lei Xiu Yuan's body is secretly preserved, Ji Tong Zhou makes a shocking decision to absorb Jianmu's power, and several loose threads remain unresolved, leaving viewers with equal parts heartbreak and cautious hope.

As a drama, The Eternal Fragrance succeeds because it never mistakes spectacle for emotion. The fantasy battles are visually ambitious and the mythology is impressively layered, but the strongest moments arrive in quiet conversations, impossible promises and painful sacrifices.

The pacing occasionally stumbles under the weight of its expansive lore, and some supporting characters deserved stronger conclusions, yet the emotional commitment of Song Weilong and Ju Jingyi keeps every major turning point believable.

Even when the plot becomes overwhelmingly complex, their chemistry gives viewers a reason to stay invested until the final scene. It is not a flawless fantasy romance, but it earns its emotional ending through patient character development rather than empty melodrama.

Does Lei Xiu Yuan really die?
The finale presents Lei Xiu Yuan as sacrificing himself, and he disappears completely. However, Luocha later retrieves his body and confirms he has not awakened after seven days. This strongly hints that his story may not be completely over, even if his immediate fate remains uncertain.

Why did Jiang Li Fei attack Lei Xiu Yuan?
She believed Ye Sha had fully taken over his body after witnessing Zhao Yue's death. She had no idea Lei Xiu Yuan was secretly forcing her to unlock her full power in order to protect her.

Why did Ji Tong Zhou betray Jiang Li Fei?
Rather than acting out of simple malice, Ji Tong Zhou believes absorbing Jianmu's power is necessary to gain enough strength after witnessing enormous losses. His decision leaves his future morality uncertain.

Is The Eternal Fragrance ending happy or sad?
It is largely a bittersweet ending. The Three Realms are saved, but the central romance ends in tragedy, several beloved characters are lost, and survivors must carry heavy emotional burdens. At the same time, hints surrounding Lei Xiu Yuan leave a small door open for hope.

Will there be Season 2?
Season 2 has not been officially confirmed by Youku. There have been rumours suggesting a continuation, but they remain exactly that—rumours—and should be treated cautiously until an official announcement arrives.

If another season does happen, it would likely explore Lei Xiu Yuan's mysterious condition, Ji Tong Zhou's transformation after absorbing Jianmu's power, Luocha's plans, the rebuilding of the cultivation world, and whether Jiang Li Fei can finally earn the peaceful future she has spent the entire series chasing.

Reports have previously suggested the creative team has a longer-term ending in mind rather than closing every storyline immediately. Given Youku's history of surprising audiences with follow-up seasons more often than many c-dramas from competing streaming platforms, fans are understandably keeping their hopes alive, even though the current ending also works as a meaningful conclusion.

The ending has already divided viewers across social media. Some praised its willingness to embrace sacrifice instead of an easy fairy-tale conclusion, while others felt Lei Xiu Yuan and Jiang Li Fei deserved one final reunion after everything they endured together.

Whichever side you fall on, The Eternal Fragrance certainly gave fans plenty to discuss long after the credits rolled. Did the finale satisfy you, or are you hoping Youku eventually brings everyone back for another chapter?
