A copyright dispute between Li Ronghao and Shan Yichun has shifted tone after both artists issued public statements, following unauthorised use of the song “Li Bai” during a recent live performance.
The controversy began on 29 March at a Shenzhen concert, where Shan Yichun performed “Li Bai” without securing prior approval from the rights holder.
The performance quickly drew attention online, prompting criticism from industry observers and a direct response from Li Ronghao, who called out the breach.
In the early hours of 30 March, Shan Yichun issued a public apology, acknowledging fault and confirming that all future performances of “Li Bai” would be halted..
She stated that promotional materials linked to the song, both online and offline, would be removed with immediate effect.
She also pledged to take full responsibility, including covering any licensing costs and potential compensation, while stressing that no other parties should be blamed for the incident.
Later that evening, Li Ronghao responded with a measured statement that reframed the dispute.
He made clear he was not seeking financial compensation, adding that if money had been his priority, permission could have been granted from the outset without controversy.
His remarks signalled a shift away from escalation, instead calling for restraint in how the issue is discussed publicly.
He also addressed the tone of online discourse, expressing concern over personal attacks directed at him and his family.
He stated that, provided there is no further defamation or hostile commentary, he is willing to consider the matter temporarily resolved.
In a brief closing note, he advised Shan Yichun to rest following her concert, a line that many interpreted as an attempt to de-escalate tensions.
Some fans have praised Shan Yichun for taking swift responsibility and issuing a clear apology, viewing her response as accountable and direct.
Others, however, argue that the incident highlights a broader issue within live performance culture, where copyright clearance is sometimes overlooked until disputes surface.
On the other side, Li Ronghao’s refusal to pursue compensation has been widely noted, with supporters describing his stance as principled, though a minority question whether the response was overly lenient given the circumstances.
The episode has also reignited conversation around copyright enforcement in China’s live music scene, particularly the expectations placed on performers and their teams to secure permissions in advance.
While disputes of this nature are not uncommon, the visibility of this case has placed added scrutiny on industry practices and artist accountability.
For now, both sides appear to be stepping back from further confrontation, but the discussion it sparked is unlikely to fade quickly.
As fans continue to debate where responsibility ultimately lies.. What do you make of Li Ronghao’s response and Shan Yichun’s apology — fair resolution or unfinished business?
